A phenomenon in Carnatic Music. He is the Guru of the Great and Late M L Vasanthakumari and Kalyanaraman Sir. He has composed some fantastic Tamil pieces, like Unnadiye Gathi Yendralaithen in the Ragam Bahudhari, Tala Adi. I have Sudha Ragunathan singing this, being of his school of music, she brings out the Brikas and prayOgams of this wonderful Ragam.

Dear Shyam,
I have a lot of tapes collected from various people but the majority of it is in bits and pieces.. Oly two or three whole concerts which all I know seem to have a copy.. Some of the things rare I have are most of Borvamma in Manji, part of Simmendramadhyamam raga, two long RTPS in Nattaikurinji with 2 different pallavis... If you are looking for something special tell me and I will tell you if I have it.

Dear Sri GBR,
I have a 4 piece concert set with a ragam thanam and pallavi set in Vagulaabharanam. Simply superb music.
I am currently collecting GNB's rendition of Thyagaraja krithis, I have some commercial ones. Do you have his Dinamanivamsha, Pancharatna kritis, and other rare ones?
thanks, Shyam

The only one of the Pancharatnam is in a HMV record (Arabi) Saadinchane... I Myself have not heard him sing anyother one. Would like to have a copy of this tape. We will work out the logistics of getting it later. Can u give me the list of songs in the tape pls

Dear Shyam,
I also have a RTP in Nattaikurinji with Mamavasada Varade as the Pallavi which is good though the recording is not very good. I am compiling a list of his recordings Raga wise and will soon e mail it to you possibly next week. A rare thing I have is Vadala gatheera(Not clear may be wrong in spelling) in Riti gowla. Someone who knows this kirthanai can correct me.

Have you heard a tape from HMV called "Guru vandhanam" containing GNB's own compositions sung by MLV

Siva, HMV (Her Masters Verse) label makes more sense for MLV but Sudha R also has a tape by Inreco with Varavallabha Ramana - Hamsadwani Nirathamuka - Udayaravichandrika ,Sivananda- kamavardani ,Samanarahithe - Sarangatarangini Srichakra Raja Nilaye - Sivasakthi, Varadanipuna - Poornachandrika, Nee Charanambhuja and Sadapalaya - Mohanam
Wonder if the 'grahabheda' aspect being discussed in the 'rare raaga' thread was inbuilt in any of these krities.

Dear Friends
Apart from everything else, GNB was a great humanitarian during his life time. I heard these from a great "saint" living in Triplicane:
"GNB used to buy Keerai for Rs.5 from a vendor". (Buying Keerai for Rs.5 in those days means a minimum of 50 people can have keerai as a replacement to sambar - that much quantity). He never minded about money even during difficult days. He was an ardent devotee of Sri Rajarajeswari during his later days. Lalgudi used to mention GNB as his elder brother. GNB respected all other vidwans of his period and lauded them for their qualities (Unlike today's cassette vidwans). A great rasika and a great "vidwan" (not like present day so called vidwans).

I understand GNB passed away with many years of music still left in him. Was he terribly sick towards the end ? Thanks for any info. on how his brilliant career was cut short.

In addition to some of the above questions, I was wondering if someone could help me with the following. I have heard GNB and TrichurVR also sing a sloka/viruttam beginning 'Dhavala Roopaa'. Was this a standard GNB piece and what were the raagas involved ?

Lakshman,
"Dhavala roopa saraswati indirai" in Anandabhairavi ( as sung by GNB ) is a tiruppugazh ( Arunagirinathar ).
I have cut and paste the following lyrics from the thiruppugazh home page.
dhavaLa roopa sarasvathi indhirai
rathipu lOmasai kriththigai rambaiyar
samuga sEvitha dhurggai bayankari buvanEsai
sakala kaaraNi saththi parambari

Thank you for posting the full lyrics of Dhavalarupa. I went by the reference from Musical Compositions in Audio Cassettes, pg 92, where it is indicated as a tevaram by Appar and sung by Radha & Jayalakshmi on Kirtana Cassette # 6CA 579. Thanks again for providing the correction.

Hello all,
Does anyone have GNB rendering Purandaradasa krithis?
I heard that him, Pattammal and Lalithangi (MLV's mother) worked on popularizing this bard.

GNB fans, Don't fail to check out an interview with his son Mr.Bhuvaneshwaran at:

As a fan of GNB, I had goose bumps while reading it.
