Kurinji is one of the ancient Panns. It is supposed to be dhaivatantya, I can't fathom this in a sampurna raga.

Nadopasaka:
Muddugare yashoda is by Annamacharya. I have not thought about the longest kriti and the shortest kriti. Will keep it in mind and let you know. Are you considering that it is in the regular pallavi, anupallavi, charana format? Some of MD' s kritis with samashthi charanas are indeed short.

Lakshman - I know you would have a huge list as usual - that is why I posted - once again - could I have the list of rare ragas and krithis in it please ::))

I will post a few kritis in rare ragas everyday. But what one may consider a rare raga another may not. Also I think the appropriate thread for this is Rare ragas. Please look for them there.

Can you confirm 'Muddugaare Yasoda' is by annamacharya via some known mudra of his ? There is clear reference to some one named 'ChinniKrishna' in one of the charanams.
Thanks

I checked my references and Muddugare yashoda mungiti mutyambidu diddarani mahimala devaki suduru-Kurinji-Adi is a composition of Annamacharya. It is in the book Annamayya Padasaurabham by Nedunuri Krishnamurti/pg 17 and published in 1994 by Nadasudha Tarangini, Vishakapatnam. I don't think you can get a more authentic modern source than Sangita kalanidhi Krishnamurti. What do you hink?

If it is Neduneri Krishnamurthy, it cannot be wrong :)

I bow to your comments. Is there a Chinnikrishna mudra ? Is there an annamacharya mudra ?
There is a reference in Sambamurty to a ragamalika amba ninnu which is attributed wrongly to SyamaSastri. Just wondered if this Ch. Kris is getting ripped off .

Sorry Nado I do not read telugu. The pallavi line I posted was translated by somebody for my index. I will have to get that person to translate further or look for the mudra.

Thanks.
Is there a raga 'Shakuntala' or 'Shakuntalavarali' ? Is there a convention ,like now for new galaxies, only numbers are used ?
If not, I would like to propose this name for a new raga that takes both dhaivatams and the rest of the Varamu-Hindolam svaras. This is a combination of Manasuloni and Neerajakshi.
One of the dhaivatams appears in 'bhashaanga' fashion.

On the Swati Tirunal Khayal thread I noticed a Bhairavi khayal of ST. Is this the Hindustani version of Bhairavi or a SindhuB. Can you please clarify. Thanks
- From: Lakshman (@ kitchener-ppp111728.sympatico.ca)
on: Thu Mar 9 20:03:53 EST 2000
Nadopasaka:
In the hindustani khayals of Svati Tirunal book all the ragas given are , I presume, hindustani ragas since no scales are noted. So when they bhairavi I would equate it to Sindhubhairavi od south.
By the way there is a raga called Shakuntala. It is a janya of mela 28 but I am not sure if I have the aro/avaro for it. I have another book that has some neat names and scales for ragas. To give some examples: krpalu (mela 20) S M P D N S; S N P G R S, Nagadipakam (mela 21) S R G M P S; S N D P M G S, Pratapasindhu (mela 22) S R G M P D N S; S N P M R G R S, Svati (mela 28) S R G P N S; S N D M G R S etc.

Lakshman, IsaiRasigai
This might be a tough one but it intrigues me. Glad to have your comments.
I am wondering if there are any krities which are DELIBERATELY composed in two different ragas by the same composer. I do not mean the controversial renditions by modern artistes of older krities, whether due to lost texts or egomaniacs. I am looking for examples , (even modern ones ) where the exact same lyric has been constructed with two ( or more ! ) ragas in mind.
MD may have some since he enjoyed shlesha's and puns.
Thanks

I was not really paying attention to this when I went through the books for my index and offhand I cannot think of any songs that were purposefully set by the composer in two different ragas.

Do almost all compositions have distinguishable and unequivocal mudras ? ( especially for recent composers ) Thanks
e.g. for abraham panditar is abhiraman ? I thought that was a raga name.

Nadopasaka:
Some contemporary composers use a mudra. Others don't. Papanasham shivan-Ramadasan, Jayachamaraja Wadiar-Srividya, MD Ramanathan-Varadadasa etc.
Abhiramam is the raga name. I don't think Abraham Panditar had a mudra. Chech out the latest rare raga kritis I have posted.

To my knowledge nither MSS or MLV have any compositions to their credit. They may have tuned many songs though.
Many contemporary artists are also composers.
T.K.Govinda Rao, T.R.Subramaniam, R.K.Suryanarayana are the well known ones.

I had tried to find out about RK Suryanarayana earlier on these threads. I heard some of his pieces on the bharat.com piece. The gayatri veena gave the Nannu Paalimpa start a unique feel and interesting sangati different from the vocal, I thought. What are some of his compositions and who might be performing them ?

Nadopasaka:
R.K.Suryanarayana was on the concert circuit until a few years ago and then suddenly dropped out. Obviously he has been active in composing and maybe teaching. I had heard one of his cassettes where he had played Vatapi ganapatim and had a delightful chittaswara passage that I'm sure he himself had added. He has some 400 kritis to his credit but few are sung by artists. Just like Bangalore Mukund's work, his compositions are perhaps used in dance performances. He is one of the select few that have composed in all the 72 melakartas. The others are: Kotishvara Iyer, Bangalore S.Mukund (3 sets), C.Rangiah, Kadalur Subramaniam, D.Pattammal, Balamuralikrishna Dokka Shriramulu and Ashok R.Madhav. Of course Dikshitar has composed in asampurna melas.

I hope that modern electronic storage means can help towards preserving some of these efforts, even if willing apostles are difficult to come by. I would give one of my ears to listen to some of the pieces you list on this and other threads.

On another thread you mentioned that there was a Tyagaraja kriti in ChurnikaVinodini. Can you give some details of this raaga and kriti ? I am aware of a raaga Sunadavinodini. Thanks
- From: Lakshman (@ hse-kit-ppp38750.sympatico.ca)
on: Sat Mar 18 07:48:01 EST 2000
Nadopasaka:
Churnikavinodini is a jany of mela 66 and uses the notes S R G M P D N S; S N D N P M G R S. There are only a couple of kritis in this raga. Apart from Tyagaraja's kriti, there is one by Tiruvettiyur Tyagayya.

Hi Lakshman Does the raaga Saurashtra have anything to do with Zoroaster or Zarathustra ? Is there any reference to the age of this raaga ?
also please, if possible, could you post some details on HemaKalyan ? Is it like Begada ? Thanks
- From: Lakshman (@ hse-kitchener-ppp78776.sympatico.ca)
on: Sat Mar 18 16:19:27 EST 2000
Nadopasaka:
Saurashtra originated from the region of India that is called Saurashtra. There is a raga in hindustani music called saurashtra Bhairav. It uses similar notes but with slight changes.
Hemakalyan is put under mela 29 and though the scale is a vakra one the overall effect is akin to Begada. In Begada ni is used in both aroha and avaroha but again ni is omitted in many sancharas. If you drop ni altogether you will have Hemakalyan.

Some krities listed above were Aliveni in Kurinji Shri Venugopala , Baalaro , Skshiraabdhi Kanyakaku and MuddugareYasoda
I think I heard SSI grind out 'CharanuSharanu' or something like that which may also be in Kurinji. Whose may this be ? Thanks Lakshman
