He is indeed one of the Greatest Composers in Music History. I am in a process of collecting and learning his works (trying to !!!). This page is for posting information about references to audio clips of Dikshitar krithis so that it will be of much use to Dikshitar "fans" like myself.

Browsing thru the five volumes of SSP (tamil edition) by Subbarama Dikshitar, one finds very interesting observations. The book features only 216 (or 217?) of Muthuswami Dikshitar krithis, out of a total of 487+- krithis that are available in various books. It includes all Kamalamba Navavarana, Guruguha, Tyagaraja vibhakti, and panchalinga (both sets) krithis. It includes two telugu krithis (rUpamu jUci, nI sATi), one maNipravala krithi "VenkatAcalapate), and two of the four rAgamALikas (caturdasha, and pUrNacandrabimba). All the eight Neelotpalamba "gauLAnta" krithis are missing (Sree Nilotpalanayike in Ritigaual is there); of the abhayamba series, only the Kedaragaula song is included; The madhuramba series is also absent. The Rahu, ketu navagraha krithis (which many believe are spurious compositions) are omitted.
None of the noTTu svara songs are there. Many scholars believe that those MD lrithis not featured in SSP are not genuine MD krithis. If that is the case, what is the status of the reamining 270+- compositions, many of which are very popular? MAybe Subbarama Dikshitar could not include "all" MD krithis, in an already bulky reference book! Any thoughts?
Subbarama Dikshitar attributes the Ragamalika "manaSAveritarula" to Muthuswami Dikshitar. But a footnote by the Editors of the series says it might have been a typo on the part of Subbarama Dikshitar, since in another place under the biography of Ramaswami Dikshitar, it is stated that Ramaswami Dikshitar composed this Ragamalika

Hmmm.. are all 72 asampurna melakartas raga krities given in the SSP ? Does SSP claim to give complete MD work ?? The delineation of 8-9 avaranas/vibhakti, the 9 grahas, the 5 lingas etc suggest a purpose, just like completing 72 melakarta raga krities. It may be noted that Tala of different MD krities in a raga is generally different, so those that are not noted in SSP can fit in. The style of use of the word 'Adi" as you have seen too suggests a uniformity.

In this week of Devi Navaratri, the Arabhi of MD Akhilaandeswaryai may be considered, which describes the 9 yoginis and sri chakra details in the charanam. Maybe Narayanan can find a rendition of this.

Regarding the 72 asampurna melakartas given in Subbarama Dikshitar's SSP: MD compositions are available only for 69 mela krithis in SSP. Asampurna melams 9 (dunibhinnaShaDjam), 52 (ramAmanohari), and 56 (cAmaram) do not have any MD krithis. But we all have heard MD compositions in these meLams - cidambareshvaram (9), several songs (at least 4) in ramAmanohari, and siddhivbinAyakam in cAmaram.

Thanks Narayanan. PPN, assuming mela 72 is authentic as given by SSP also, the 3 you mention are likely to be genuine since MD specifies 'dvisaptati raaga' in the 72nd mela raga kriti Shringara RasaManjarim. There is no reason to suppose he would not complete the melas. This would also take care of the 2 rahu-ketu graha krities. MD cites Navagraha independently in a couple of kritis and as a zodiacal expert he would not ignore these grahas.

Although not given in SSP, each of the Nilotpalaamba krities shows correspondence, given below, of aspects of Devi with the respective aavarana of the Kamalaamba set. Indeed the set ends with # 9 similar in grammar structure to the Ahiri. It may also be noted that the second avarana of this set (Nlpmba) while not in Kalyani, for obvious reasons, uses the pallavi of the MD Kalyani classic Bhajare re chita.
1. Trailokyachakra vaasini, Trailokya (mohana) chakavartini 2. Kamala nagara nivaasinim, kamalapura sadanaam 3. Shankara naayikayaa , shankaranaayikayaa 4. Kali-kalmasha naashinyai , kalikalmasha parihaarinyai 5. Sukshmakaaranarupinyah & kulakaula , Sukshma rupa &kulakaulikaadi 6. Nilakantha-ardhasharirinyaah, shankaryaa 7. Kavijanaadi modinyaam, munijana modinyaam 8. Jagadambike (see Todi Kmlmba dhyana )9. Shrngaara rasakari, Shrngaara rasa kadambaa
While on this subject, I had previously discussed the manohari-antya raagas (only 6).
Deva, isha, madhava, rama, gauri, kamala (manohari), saraswati.
Clearly only gaula-antya offers the set of 8 that can permit the vibhakti idea to be used for Nilotpalamba devi. Narayana, Marga-riti, Kannada, Kedara, Gaula, MMgowla, Purva, Chaaya, jana-Riti with reference also to natabhairave. Based on all this and the known methods of MD ( to embed raga mudra, to describe and invoke all different deities names in his song ) I believe Nlpmba set is genuine (and that SSP is not totality of MD output)

It is quite interesting to note that the last MD Vibhakti kriti for the Tyagaraja of Tiruvarur in the raaga ViraVasanta ends with the words 'Shri Kamalaambikaa smarana'. This word is not used anywhere else except the Navavarana. Further, the Gaula (Tyg Paalaya ) and Shri (Tyg. Mahaadhwajaaroha ) krities may be regarded as dhyana and Mangalam for this set.
All these three also cite the 'ajapaa natana' of the Yogiraaja. All MD vibhakti krities have full structure. The status of the MD anandaBhairavi 'Tyg Yoga Vaibhavam' is unknown since it is Samashti charanam, quite a long one, though. I suppose its main feature is the built in word patterns even though it is also set in Tiruvarur.

The extensive use of the 'aadi' word in the krities of the dikshitar has been noted earlier.
In this context the kriti 'Naatak-aadi Vidyaalaya' which covers 108 taalas constructed by MD's father Ramaswamy Dikshitar may be noted.

It would be interesting to know if MD's 'Meenaakshi memudam dehi" in Gamakakriya is given in the SSP ?

Yes, the Gamakakriya krithi "mInAkShi me mudam dehi" is available in SSP (Part 4 of the Tamil Edition).

Dikshitar does not use the names 'vahni-vaasini' or 'harihara putra jananim' anywhere else except in the superb Kaambhoji 'MarakatavalliManasaa smaraaami' dedicated to the fire dwelling devi.
While this is pretty short, the shortest MD kriti must be the Janjuti 'Ganesha kumara paahi maam'.

What is Baluswami dikshitars mudra ?
some of the S'bharana note swara kritis do not have Guruguha mudra and they are known to have been joint effort of Dikshitar brothers.

Many thanks to Narayanan for uploading the excellent Kailasanathena by Smt. Vedavalli. In this as in the Nvvrna or Mrktvllim, Kaambhoji shines in the dikshitars vast imagination to evoke the charming of Devi and her consort-mohini, mohaakarena. But in the profound kriti to Subramanya, the tenor and words are more formal, even solemn, ...tatvopadesha kartre and Kamboji switches from beautiful to grand. Surprisingly the Dikshitar does not use the raga mudra in this kriti.
Dikshitars Kambhojis while using different taala show linkages via the use of some common ideas/words, e.g. the adept deity, in 'nipuna', or 'bhuvana bharana'. An interesting oddity is in the Kamboji kriti Saa-mba Sa-daaShivaaya where there is both alliteration and swara-akshara carried out until the last phrase of the charanam. For the last phrase the words begin with Maa (maadhurya sudha, maarkandeya..) and the swaras are the madhyamam, for all the others they are shadja (lower or upper).
It is not clear why the ValmikaLinga is connected to the 'shivaardhaangam' aspect. Any ideas appreciated.

In "Balagopala" (Bhairavi), there is a line in the charana (vaanisarccita pitaambaradhara vaijayanti vana maalaadhara) which is absent in the three excellent renditions (DKP, MDR and KVN) I have of the kriti. Any thoughts on this?

A small doubt on the lyrics in mInakshi memudam dehi. The lines mInalocani paasha mOcani are sung usually with the words kadhamba vanavaasini.. I thought the forests surrounding madurai are called kaDamba vanam. It would be interesting to know how it is given in SSP..

SSP vol 3 page 1081 (tamil ed) gives the word as "kadamba". Devi Tripurasundari is always described as fond of roaming in the forest of kadamba trees. The Tripurasundari aShTakam of Adi Shankara starts with "kadambavanacAriNIM". Perhaps the description of kadamba was just on Goddess and not specific to madurai region.

Madhuramba-begada, minaambikaayaah + mamavaminakshi =varali etc cite this forest as do a few on Somasundareswara (deity also of Madurai - kadamba vananaatham), but so does the Nilakantham kedaragaula with AkhandaKaveri reference.
