It will be nice for us all to discuss the various Carnatic concerts we attend during the year. I feel that it's a good idea to categorise this by year, starting with 1998, so that we can keep track of what, who saw in which year.

Gopal: All of the nottu svara sahityas were composed by Muttusvami Dikshitar. The violin was introduced into Karnatak music by Dikshitar's younger brother Balusvami Dikshitar. He was fascinated by the instrument when he heard it first in the western band at the darbar of Serfoji maharaja of Tanjur. I don't know if the story about Ramasvami Dikshitar taking the sons to Madras fort is true or not!

Narayan & Lakshman,
Thanks for your info. It was of great help.
Narayan, in fact the Karn. Dev. kirti which she sung was the bhajare maanasam by MV.
I wonder whether other nottu swaraas are also popular?

Attended Vijay Siva's concert last Sunday @ Middletown,Connecticut--Organised by IDRF(India Development Releif Fund).
Here are the one's I could recollect:
He started with Viriboni Varnam (Bhairavi) -performed two speeds.
Sogasudha Mridanga Talamu- Sri Ranjani (Thiyagaraja Krithi)-- One of the best Sriranjani's I've heard. Excellent Kalpana Swarams. Could hear the shade of the great DKJ now and then...
Main was Sankarabharanam - A Thiyagaraja Krithi (less known).Neraval was very good.
He performed a song from Thiyaga Boomi (sung by DKP) in Kunthala Varali (Punniya Bharatha boomi).
He concluded with Karpagme --Madhyamavathi
Violin by Bombay Gayathri amd Mridangam by Manoj Siva.

I think we both have similar taste...Feels good to note that.
Recently Vijay Siva has realeased two cassettes (Vol 1 & 2) on "Appreciating Carnatic Music". It's really great. Excellent for beginners looking for some gudance and info to gte into the carnatic sphere.
Great effort and a must buy for even for those who know carnatic music and wanted to get clarfied on some aspects of it fundamentally.

Hi! Friends
Attended Nithyasree's Concert last Friday @ Univ.Of Hartford organised by IDRF.
She sung for nearly 3.5 hrs.
Here goes the list:
Varnam--- Saveri (Sarasuda..)
Panduri Thi Kolu (Hansanadham) with Alapana and Kalpana Swarams..excellent rendering with Bhaava..
Main piece was Thodi (Alapana was simply exciting. She could touch almost all of the "familiar" and "reverbarating" heights of Thodi...)
She did a Viruttam (Raaga malikka )-A Purandarasa Slokam
in Dhanyasi,Hamsa Nandhi,Suruti, and a couple of more Raagas.
Thondru Nigaz.... Engal thaai--- Bhairavi (Bharathiyar Song) was great. Typical of a DKP/DKJ tradition- "Punching" Bhairavi.
She sung a "Padham" in Pantuvarali.
Concluded with "Cheli Ne Nenu--A "Javali" in Raaga Paras..... It's also a "famous" piece from DKJ / DKP school.
Violin by Kalpana Venkat blended so well through out the concert. Follow ups were perfect and pleasing.
Mridangam by I.Siva Kumar (Palghat Mani Iyer's Sishyan and Nithyasree's father)was good.
On the whole a very nice concert for 3.5 hrs which is quite rare in US( Avg duration is about 2 hrs as far as I've heard)

Hamsanadham exploration is not too common. Should've been good. I'm a bit disappointed there wasn't an RTP, in this 3.5 hr concert. BTW, i heard such long concerts are quite common in US. My friend told me TNS once sang for more than 5 hours. Maybe now the situation is different..

Gopal,
I attended Nityasri's concert at MIT, Boston. It was an excellent evening. The concert lasted for close to 3 1/2 hours.
At Boston, the main piece was in Karaharapriya - the song was "pakkala nila paati".
Guruvarulum thiruvarulum - abohi was the vinayakar kriti. Some other songs were :
Ranga pura vihara (bridava saranga), innu daya bhaarathe (purandara dasar), virutham in ragamaaligai. Thillana was in karna-ranjini.
She sang a composition of her mother in paalini raagam - the song had the raga's name occuring in pallavi, a-pallavi and charanam.
Did she sing "Raagathil sirandha raagam edhu ?" - a thukkada in ragamaaligai at Hartford too?
Vijay Siva's concert is on nov 5th at boston.

Chandy
She did not sing the Raaga Malika "Ragathil Sirandha Raagam Edhu".
The "paalini" piece is available in a Amutham Inc Release CD called "Raagam 1". This also has the above mentioned Raaga malika piece.
One more good song in that album is a song in raaga "Saraswathi" with the raaga mudhra in it.
Enjoy Vijay Siva's Concert @ MIT.
I hope Vijay Siva gives a RTP there..(He's great at that).
Last time I attended Dr.Ramani's concert there.. He played a RTP in Keeravani for about 1.5 hrs. It was great. Total concert time was about 4 hrs.....

Gopal,
Nityasri had sung the "raagathil sirandha raagam" song in many other concerts at Tampa, NC and it seems to be one of her regular numbers.
I'm trying to get Nityasree MIT concert's audio tape through a friend. That should contain the raagathil sirandha raagam edhu song. Thanks for info on Raagam-1 CD.. I'll try and locate it.
Yup, I was also there for N.Ramani's concert at MIT. It was awesome.
Say a Hi to sree ganesh :))

Yesterday Sanjay Subramaniam sang for the South Indian Music Academy in Downey, CA. He was accompanied by Varadarajan and Srimushnam Raja Rao.
This is the list of songs :
1. Sami Ninne - Pantuvarali Varnam
2. Enduku Nirdaya - Harikambhoji
3. Sashivadana - Chandrajyothi ( + Raga Alapana. Sanjay announced the raga after he sang it.)
4. Thyagaraja Yoga - Anandabhairavi - Brilliantly sung. IMHO, the highlight of the concert.
5. Kaddanu variki - Thodi ( + Raga Alapana. Taniavartanam here and Raja Rao, as usual, was outstanding).
6. Eppadi manam - Huseni.
7. Enthati kulukey - Kalyani
8. RTP in Nataikurinji - 2-kalai Adi. Eduppu at half away from samam. The Pallavi ( IMHO, a very poor one ) was ' Nataikurinji enbar. siranda engaladhu '. Though the ragam was sung very well, the tanam was very brief and the pallavi was a big letdown.
9. Kandena Udipi Krishnana - Behag
10. Manada - Virutham - Ragamalika - Kedaragowlai, Saveri, Mohanam, Sindhubhairavi, Sama.
11. Thillai - Sama.
12. Govardana giridhari - Darbari Kanada
13. Thillana - Gambhiravani.
Sanjay announced that this was a composition by T.K.Govinda Rao and, coincidentally (!), Govinda Rao was among the audience.
14. Mangalam.
Varadarajan's accompaniment was excellent but IMO his raga essays and swaraprastarams left something to be desired. Raja Rao was scintillating both during the accompaniment and during the tani. Sanjay seems to have a soft spot nowadays for brighas in turbo mode. It is alright if it is used as spice but it grates on one's ears when there is an overdose.
Overall, it was a good concert.

Last Sunday, T.N.Seshagopalan performed at Wong Auditorium,MIT,Cambridge,MA--organised by MITHAS.
Here is the List of songs (& Raagas as i coud identify--may be incorrect)
1.Chalamela--Varnam--Naataikurinji
2.Siddhi Vinayakam ---Lathangi /Kalyani?
3.Janani Ninnuvina--Riti Gowlai-MD (with a brief alapna)
4.Anbaaga Ennai Kan Paar Ambika---Bindhumalini
5.Kshirasaagara Sayana--Devgandhari-Tyagaraja
6.Kshemam Guru Gopala--Mohanam (Main song with alapana,neraval,thani)
7.Kaa Vaa Vaa --Varali--Papanasam Sivan
8.RTP--Charukesi(mesmerising one--Oh! Boy --to keep up with the beats was really tough!!)
Pallavi goes like this: Vennai Thinna Chinna thanama, hare krishna!!
9.Ragamaalika Viruttam--Sahana,Senchurutti,Kapi,etc.,
10.Excellent Hindustani piece--Yamuna Kalyani?
11.Thiruppugazh---Chakravaham(what a selection of raga for that fast track song---it takes a genius like TNS to that,I guess!)
12.Mangalam
The accompanying artists could cope up with TNS .
I have listened to TNS many a times back at Madras--accompanying artists had to give up some times .I remember once he sketched 'hemavathi" beyond any possibe imagination (it was like nectar flowing from eternity!! )--poor violonist just coould not play.He kept the violing down for about 5 mts--till TNS could come down to EARTH!!
As always TNS started the concert late. I have not seen a single concert of TNS starting on time. Is there any reason he starts late?!!
