He is indeed one of the Greatest Composers in Music History. I am in a process of collecting and learning his works (trying to !!!). This page is for posting information about references to audio clips of Dikshitar krithis so that it will be of much use to Dikshitar "fans" like myself.

Nadopasaka:
thanks for all the observations. I shall go thru SSP (five volumes in tamil) very carefully and try to answer your queries re: samashti charanams. I am even prepare a detailed contents of SSP for the benefit of this group. By the way, the Red Book is simplya revised version of the 15 volume Vina Sundaram Iyer Book, prepared by his son Vina S. venkatesan. he incorporates around 15-18 new krithis that were either left out, or discovered later. SOme of these new krithis were published by Vina SUndaram Iyer in Journal of Music Academy.
The 15 volume contain 462 krithis, as opposed to 485 in the Red book.

Thanks very much PPN for your help and comments. Could you comment on why/if SSP or the Dikshitar school considers Mohana as Bhashanga under Kalyani (#65) unless the old synflux site had a typog./transcription error ?
I find it very interesting that all Nottu swaras are in either Tisra or Chatusra Ekam talam !! Can you confirm that ? Are there NottuSwaras by any other individuals, e.g. Baluswami D. etc.
Even in the raagas where MD has several krities, there is generally a methodical use of most of the talams. Except for Hindolam and Shanmukhapriya which have a strong Rupakam usage.
Thanks for your comments.

It is said that Dikshitar composed the Nottu swara krithis after getting inspiration from the Brithish band then stationed in various parts of Tamilnadu. Most of the mellows that these bands play are in tisra nadai and almost all are in eka thalam. One good example is (i think) "muchukunda" which has the tune of the British National Anthem (God save the queen).
Regarding Hindolam/Chamaram i thnk it is only a matter of coincidence ...moreover there are only 3 krithis in each of them (Navagraha excluded).

'Raakaa shashivadana inka pa-raakaa ' begins a Tyagaraja kriti in Takka?? with a play on words.
This Raakaa reference to the moon etc. also appears in the beautiful Kamalamanohari- MD's Kanchadalaayadaakshi. cf. note also the usage Rakenduvadanam of the racy Vasanta Ramachandra Bhavayaami.

Thanks very much , Narayanan.
A Kamaakshi ( distinct from Kamalamba, Balambika, Nilotpalamba, abhayaamba ) based set of MD krities can be [1] Sumadyuti - Kamakshi kaamakoti , [2] Karnataka suddhasaveri - Ekaambresha naayike shive shri Kamakshi pahimam , [3] Kamalamanohari - kanchadalaayadaakshi Kamakshi, [4] Bilahari - Kamakshi shri?? varalakshmi , and [5] SaraswManoh - Saraswati manohari sankari .
Not clear if these two Sama - annapurne visalakshi , Sbharana- nottu svara - kamalasana vandita should also also qualify ??

Other krithis are
1. Kaumari - Gauri velavali (charanam)
2. Kanakambari Karunyamritha - Kanakambari
3. Namasthe Paradevathe - Devararanji
4. Neerajakshi Kaamaakshi - Hindolam
5. Avyaaja Karunakataakshi - Saalanganaata
6. Kaamaaksi Mam pahi - Sudhdha desi

Narayanan, I stashed the Kaumari gauri in the Balambika set ( for a variety of reasons ) but the others certainly make sense. It is interesting that MD's raga choice for this set of 10 manages not to intersect the other Devi based group kritis (except maybe ShriMadhurapuri-bilahari) raagas ?

Kamakshiim Kalyaniim (Kalyani, Rupakam)
Neerajakshi Kamakshi (Hindolam, Rupakam)
also qualify. But, the sama krithi does not qualify since it refers to Kuzhithalai Viswanatha Annapurna temple (or Kasi, as some people think).

PPNs your Kalyani example actually unites most of the Amba Groups !! No such thing possible with the Gowla antya Nilotpala set, however.

It is natural to expect an MD group based on Lalita, given his fascination with the Lalitopakhyana, the Bijaakshara etc.
Maybe these will qualify since they seem to use the lalita word.
[1] mOhana nATa - mOhana nATa rAgapriyE lalitE , [2] Ananda bhairavi - paradEvatE namastE pAhimAm lalitE varadE, [3] MadhyamAvati - shrI rAjarAjEshvarIm tripura sundarIm lalitA ,
[4] nAsAmaNi - shrI ramA sarasvatI sEvitAm shrI lalitAm [5] dEvakriya - lalitAmbikAm cintayAmyaham [6] bhairavi - lalitAmbikAyai lakSa [7] pUrNacandrika - shrI rAjarAjEshvari tripurasundari [8] saugandhini - kAmakOTi pIThavAsini [9] tODi - pAlayamAm bRhadIshvari bhaktajanAvana
[10] a possible mangala kriti in suraTi - lalitA paramEshvari jayati Two dhyana krities ??!
[11] lalita paHncamam - bRhadIshvarIm bhajarE citta
[12] dhauta paHncamam- mAtaHNgi marakatAHNgi
I could not find a Kalyani kriti however and this is bothering me no end. I am willing to use the following to satisfy this anal urge but it does not seem to use the word 'lalit' anywhere.
kalyANi - shivakAmEshvarIm cintayEham ??

That makes sense obviously. Can't think how I missed it. What about that Kalyani kriti ?? There are two others Gyanaprasunambike and Brahmavidyambike that also do not refer directly to 'lalita/e' ? Thanks

Well i thought about it and seem to like the shivaKameswari Kalyani best to round out the Kamakshi set. The complete pallavi is very suggestive 'shivakAmEshvarIm cintayEham shRHNgAra rasa sampUrNakarIm' !! This business of completion, re. completing the shringara rasa seems like this Kalyani kriti may have been intended. Well anyway I got a kick out of it, so dont laugh too hard. We can throw out two 'Lalitambika' vibhakti krities above and replace them with the Kalyani and the Lalitha suggested by Narayanan. All is right with the world.

Ok Isrsgi will stick with it another day, I guess.
There is an MD BalaKrishna-Balagopala Navavarana which might be [1] balagopala palaya (bhairavi ) [2] santana gopalakrishna (kamas) [3] shri venugopala (kurinji) [4] shri krishnam baja (todi) [5] shri rajagopalabala (saveri) [6] ananta balakrishnam (isamanohari) [7] Chetah shri balakrishnam (dhwijavanti) [8] muraharena mukundena (suddha mukhari) [9] Baalakrishnam bhaavayaami (gopika vasantam)
A possible dhyanam kriti ( what are these ? hmmm..lets chew on this.. hmm... ) for this set can be the spurious Santhanam concoction/misattribution in mohana (GopikaManohara)... NOT ! How about 'sarasa dala nayana sankataharana hare govinda' also in Kamas ? hmm. doesnt fit in with the other kamas.

Come, let us take the names of the deities, MD style ! Naama siddhanta may not be only Tyagarajas preserve. This time the mountain goddess x-varana.
[1] Shri parvati paramesvara - bauli [2] Parvata rajakumari shri parvati - shriranjani [3] Parandhamavathi jayath parvati - dharmavati [4] Parvatavarddhani - sama [5]Pahimam parvati - mohanam [6] Paranjyotishmati parvati - jyoti. These four don’t carry 'parvati' per se but seem to be related [7] Ekaamresa naayakim - shanmukhapriya [8] Aanandaamrutha karshini - amrutavarshini [9] Dharma samvardhani - hindolam [10] Shree Kantimati - hemavati. AnnapurneV duplicates Sama however but there may be others. The bauli addresses both deities and the 'parvat' motif is also used in addressing her consort in some other krities.
