I remember reading something in Sruti about a conflict that Semmangudi had with Balamuralikrishna for which the latter filed a suit. Does anyone know more about this?

Hi Rajaram
I guess you are refering to his srI sathyanArAyanam, right? It's an awesome rendition. I also like his rendition of dwaitamu sukhamA, mArubalka, appan avadhariththa and bhairavi swarajathi.
Here's a little bit of info about SSI.
SSI was born on 25th July 1908 to Sri Radhakrishna Iyer and Smt Dharmasamvardhini Ammal in a small village called Semmangudi in Tanjore district. His maternal uncle was the famous Thirukodikaval Krishna Iyer. His formal music training started on the Vijayadasami day of 1917 under his cousin, Sri Narayana Swamy Iyer. He also learnt music from Gottuvadyam Sri Sakharama Rao, Umayalapuram Swaminatha Iyer and Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer. He has got numerous award in his illustrious music career.

Hi Sreeram: (Nice to meet you here :)
yes I'm indeed referring to 'Sri satyanaaraayanam'. My other favorites
deva deva - mm gowla (beautiful swaras)
seethamma - vasantha
His varali is also great.
Anyone have his rare concert recordings?

Hi Rajaram
Indeed - chances of meeting you now in the net are more than when in person I was at KRDL. ;-)
I have quite a few live concert recordings of his - don't know if they are rare.

May be now ? Is SSI active ???

hi all,
i am a newbie on this forum. nevertheless, i am a diehard
fan of SSI and also an amateur singer myself.
i honestly feel that his sarvalaghu swaras have a punch
in them!!!
btw, anybody who has heard TM Krishna sing would
definitely be reminded of SSI (with a better void though!)

Ravi Kiran: T.M. Krishna does indeed sing some krities like SSI and that may well be because he has learnt some krities from the maestro. TMK's first guru, I believe, was Sitarama Sarma of Kalakshetra. Apart from TMK, another youngster who sings a lot like SSI is Abhishek Raghuram who, at the tender age of 15(?), is a prodigy by any definition. AR is Palghat Raghu's grandson and his guru is P.S. Narayanaswamy, an SSI sishya. I heard him last year at Wesleyan University. Suffice it to say he blew me away.

Shyam,
Yes, you are right about Abhishek - he is simply
astounding. I was lucky enough to hear him live at
Mylapore Fine Arts Club during December 1998. His
Keeravani was mind boggling.
As regards TM Krishna, his swara singing style is
certainly a take-off on the SSI bani. Especially, his
long drawn swaras in the first kalam.
Do you know of any one who might be having archives of SSI
tapes for exchange?
Thanks,
Ravi.

Semmengudi Srinivasa Iyer is one of the greatest musicians of all-times. I have a book about him with pictures of him in concert with Rajamanikkam Pillai, Kodandarama Iyer, Mani Iyer, Pazhani, CSM, TNK, etc.
His music is devine. His swaras and alapana are also exceptional. I heard his concert at the Parthasarathy Swami Sabha in Madras this January (2000). He sang for 2 1/2 hours, at the age of 93!!! He was accompanied by TNK, Umayalapuram Sivaraman and Harishankar, a divine combination indeed! He sang Thodi main and an RTP.
He is definteley, as the magazine SRUTI states, a grand old man!

Hello all,
Does anyone have a SRUTI issue about him. I have one about MLV and its really good. Also I am wondering why he does not sing a lot of Purandaradasar krithis. Does anyone know?
- From: Ravi Kiran (@ 202.54.26.125)
on: Tue May 2 04:49:07 EDT 2000
shyam,
yes, even i have noticed that he has not sung
that many purandaradasa krithis.
very few ones - and that too, only the standard,
well known ones.
maybe, because he was too involved in brushing
up all the swati tirunal and sadashiva brahmendra
krithis.
infact, he has not set to tune many songs.
i heard that manasa sancharare was his tuning.
and so was the raga malika version of Bhavayami
raghuramam.
a genius indeed!!

SSI also doesn't favor too many of Muttiah Bhagavatar krities as well.

Rohan:
Is that book available for sale? Can you give the source?
He sang in Jan 2000 at this age? Amazing!

SSI was greatly inspired by Ariyakudi. He is supposed
to have said,"Learn from me but sing like Ariyakudi".
his ariyakudi influence is pronounced in his
madhyama kala rendition of most krithis.
but, come what may, his sarvalaghu patterns
are irressistible.
especially the excessive dhatu and jantai patterns
that he weaves.

critic subbudu is supposed to have been
SSI's nemesis!!!
subbudu himself has told it on one occassion.
anyone throw some light on this?

1. SSI mookkAla pAdarAr.
2. its SSI's chorus.('cos tomany sishyAs singing at the background)
3. if he sings 'appan avadharitha thalam' it will sound like 'appam poritha annammA!!'

I wouldn't consider Subbudu much of a role model for music critics. Although entertainers do get paid for what they do, they still have the right to dignity, and some protection against the vicious personal attacks that S. subjected them to on occasion. In that he wasn't that different from the shock jocks of today. The fact that SSI and BMK attended the celebration in his honor is not an endorsement of his methods. It merely says that they are classy human beings.

KShyam, It is possible that they may have attended also because of each's perception that 'the enemy of my enemy is my friend'. I am also aware of a few instances in Hindustani music criticism where the reviewer was subjected to considerable harassment by powerful connections, after a hostile (and justified) notice.
