Name : H.H. Sri Padmanabha Dasa, Vanchipala, Sri Ramavarma Kulasekara Perumal. As he was born in the asterism of swathi he was called swathi thirunAl (custom adopted by the Royal House of Travancore)
Parents : Rajaraja varma and Rani Lakshmi Bai
DOB: 16th April 1813. He was garbha-srimAn (pre-natal sovereign)
Ascended the throne: 20th April 1829
Passed Away : 25th December 1847
* Composed in six languages : Sanskrit, Malayalam, Telugu, Marathi, Hindi and Urdu. He has some in Tamil as well and this is considered controversial.
* Was a contemporary of Tyagaraja. Both never met but ST heard a lot about T through T's direct disciple Kanniah Bhagavathar who visited Travancore.
* Often used mudra is padmanAbhA and kamalanAbhA. There are 20+ other mudras of his.
* There were many famous musicians in his court. Prominent ones include: paramEswara bhAgavathar, tanjavUr quartet (Ponniah, Chinniah, Sivanandam and Vadivelu), ravi varman thambi and kanniah bhAgavathar.
* Said to have composed more than 300. Famous compositions are:
pannagEndra sayanA - rAgamAlikA
dasAvathAra rAgamAlikA
bhavayAmi raghurAmam - originally set by ST to sAvEri, set to rAgamAlikA later.
sArasAksha paripAlaya - pantuvarAli
chalamEla - shankarAbaranam - ata tAla varnam (one of the best ata tAla varnams)
* Veena Balachandra stirred a lot of controversy about ST.
* Semmangudi did a lot in popularising ST's composition when he spent some time in Travancore.

By the way Ramji mentioned Paripalaya in Pantuvarali. I think he meant Sarasaksha Paripalaya. There is a Paripalayamam in Ritigaula.

I saw a posting 'He (Swathi Thirunal) was the only one who established Kerala's name in Carnatic music history...'.
There was his contemporary Shadkala Govinda Maarar (it is said Thiyagaraja's 'Entharo Mahanubavulu' refers to him). Marar was an exponent of Sobhana Sangeetham.
Can any music lover throw some more light on Sobhana Sangeetham? Is it a subset of Karnatic music?

When I said Swati Thirunal was the only one to put Kerala's name on the Carnatic music history, I meant he was the most well known, still his compositions are sung pretty much by Balamurali Krishna, GNB, etc.....

Mani:
Svati Tirunal's compositions have been popularized by Semmangudi Shrinivasa Iyer, K.V.Narayasvami and of course M.S.Subbulakshmi as well

Did Swathi Thirunal Maharajah really compose
these krithis? just wondering!! According to
late S.Balachandar- Swathi Thirunal never existed?
Again he was correct in proving that Balamurali Krishna did not invent any new ragas - Music Academy kept silence and BMK stopped using the
title "Sangeetha Kalanidhi" .. any comments!! But
BMK still claim that he invented new ragas and talas??

>>>According to

Well, according to S. Balachander, I think he lacked knowledge SOMEWHERE in Carnatic music history, Thirunal established Kerala's name in Carnatic music history, if he never existed, why is his compositions still recited even to this day??

Mani,
That's what the controversy is all about...
Dr. Balachander is a rabble-rouser. Nevertheless he's quite a knowledgeable person.
As for singing "his" compositions... well.. it is quite plausible that the original composers could have been Tanjore quartet, Parameshwara Baghavathar et al.,.. Anyway, both Balachander and ST are quite controversial and learned socities have kept mum on this topic and perhaps we should too. ;-)

Swati Thirunal also invited Hindustani musicians
to the darbar and composed "Khayal" and "Drupad" compositions.
e.g. "Chaliye Kunjana...."
ST encouraged both Carnatic and Hindustani Sangeet ...
Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer says the following
about Swati Thirunal: "He was a remarkable man.
No wonder he was crowned at 16. Swati Thirunal
died when he was 33, but within that short span
of life, composed nearly 400 kirtans. We have
processed around 200 of these. The Maharajas
of Mysore, Cochin and Ramanathapuram also were
great patrons of Carnatic music."

Swati Tirunal's most widespread piece has to be the famous Kamboji varnam Sarasijanabha. I venture to say it must be in the top 5 of the most sung or played pieces ever. ( due to countless students etc. )
ST also has an interesting Mangalam in Yadukula K. Bhujagashayino ( has been sung by KVN ).
I think the Yadukula Kamboji (YK) flavor of Kerala is unique and well used in dance there. To me, it differs somewhat from conventional YK treatments.
Another pretty kriti of ST is Gopalaka Pahimam in Revagupti ( which differs only in gandharam from Bhupalam )

Must also note 'Deva deva Jagadiswara' in the
Deshya raga, Purvi Kalyani sung often by semmangudi and KVN.
also Paripaalaya Sarasiruhalochana (I have heard GNB in this ) in Pantuvarali.
It is, however, surprisingly difficult to identify as widely prevalent krities , such as listed in this thread, for any other Carnatic composers from Kerala (pre-1900), royal family or otherwise.
Only Parameswara Bhagavatar's Natta varnam Sarasija comes to mind readily.

A lot of krithis of ST are sung by KVN. There is a tape released by Tharangini ( I suppose) sung by KVN on Swathi tirunal's compositions. Most of them have been covered above. Nobody has made a mention about his padams. "Aliveni endu Cheyyum" is one that has been sung by KVN. Bhujaga as mentioned by "Nadopasaka" is also an interesting mangalam and is excellent to listen to.
The other artist who sings ST is Neyyantinkara Vasudevan (from kerala)

There is also no mention about manipravalam style of composition. I thought he was famous for that. could someone clarify

I find it odd that there are no krities by Swati Tirunal in Abhogi or Bageshree while there are in Bhimpalas and Brindavana saranga. All are deshya ragas and janyas of Kharaharapriya ! ( also none in either Abheri or Hamir Kalyani)
While there is just one kriti listed for ST in Kharaharapriya itself there appears to be nothing in Harikamboji ( which Dikshitar or Syama Sastri did not favor either ). This need confirming.
any comments ?
( my source: Bhagyalakshmi's text published in Trivandrum, which seems like a
reliable source for material on ST )

Nadopasaka:
You are right about ST not having composed in Abhogi, Bageshri or Abheri. But there is one kriti Satatam tavaka pada sevanam karavani in Kharaharapriya and two kritis Gangeyavasana dhara padmanabha and Karunanidhan kunj ke bihari tumhari bansi (hindi) in Hamirkalyani. There is the tillana in Dhanashri which is close to Abheri.

I forgot to add the info on ST's manipravala kritis in my last posting. Here it is.

Manasi dussahamayyo madana - Ahiri
Naga shayanam shri padma bhanu - Kamavardhini
Nilappuri kuzhalale niraja nabha - Yadukulakambhoji
Pankajakshaman ramesha ninganatava - Todi
Parttu padum - Nilambari
Prana nayaka mam pahi - Dhanyasi
Suradindu samamukha - Kambhoji
Valayunniha jnanaisham vinnulaga - Varali
