Paraphrase:
So much for the literal meanings. It should be fairly obvious by now that the
"blind dog" in the "marketplace" is Sri Purandaradasa's chosen metaphor for
the plight of the individual soul in this world.
The first two lines (Pallavi/refrain) express ironic wonder at the plight of the
unseeing dog that wanders into the marketplace (only to get itself into trouble).
Stanza 1:
As a dog might choose the grossness of a bone over the sweetness of sugar, so too
does the unseeing soul choose the false attachment of family (over what is permanent),
unmindful of the utter loneliness of death.
Stanza 2:
The dog that enters the mart with ignorant eagerness is soundly thrashed. The hell that
the dog thus met also awaits the soul that wastes this life (by choosing ignorant ways).
Stanza 3:
Behold the soul that studied the Vedas, engaged in scholarly disputations, and
forged clever phrases. It seems to have thereby lost its way and perplexed itself,
besides becoming a target for death.
Stanza 4:
Cycles of birth and death have yielded now to human birth. Yet the soul has apparently
roamed in forests of ignorance and lost knowledge of its true self.
Stanza 5:
As a (restless) monkey might be expected (in its indiscriminateness), to lose
a precious object (a ruby) by casting it hither and thither, so too the soul, in its
forgetting Vitthala, suffers here and hereafter.
This is, of course, a skeletal paraphrase. But I hope this is provisionally adequate
for your purposes.
