What are the twenty two sruthis and how do they get used in classical music? How are they related to the 12 notes? And do way they have different significance for carnatic and hindustani music? |

Shyam, Your questions require lengthy answers - that may run to pages! So briefly, these are the guidelines, you may have to look for some sites on music (indian or western), tuning methods, etc:
Firstly, the meaning of the word 'sruthi' in music is not clear. Any they are more than 22 sruthis - technically. The 22 sruthis you are talking of, are just names given to the notes for the convenience of giving them some order so that they can be fitted into the 'melakartha' schemes.
The same sruthi, having the same name in different 'melas' may have a different frequency - slightly higher or lower.
The 12 notes of the Western scale is again not consistent - though, they have some sort of compromises when it comes to setting these notes to some 'standard' frequencies. So the Western musicians have terms like 'equal-tempered scale' and 'natural-scale' etc.
Of carnatic and hindustani music -
1. Carnatic music is an side-shoot of Tamil-music. As such, Carnatic music is less than 400 years old.
2. Hindustani music is older than Carnatic Music - as it is a blend of native Indian music with some Persian and Arabic Flavour!
