By rare ragas I mean seldom used ragas like soorya, rasikapriya and other ragas like
Poornashadjam that are generally known only
through famous compositions.
First of all, why are these ragas "rare"? I'm
interested in a list compositions based on
such rare ragas and references to rendering of
these ragas.

Lakshman could you also include any material on Chayavati when you post for Nandini's query ? It wasn't there in your post on rare ragas beginning with Ch. Is it the same as Suryakantam ? MD seems to have a kriti in this as well as in Bhairavam.
Any info. greatly appreciated.

Nadopasaka & others:
First, let me clear up the doubts about Karnaranjani. I had thw scale wrong. There is a vakra sanchara in it. I lloked it up in Muttiah Bhagavatar's book (he developed this raga first). It is S R G M G P D S; S N D P M G R S.
Apart from Dikshitar's kriti in Chayavati there is only one other- Shuru shuruppodu/Adi by Ramanathan Chettiar.
In Amarasenapriya a kriti by R.K.Suryanarayana Enduku nirdaya is the only other one.
Some Jingala kritis apart fom the ones already listed:
Dasharathi toda sari by Tumu Narasinmhadasa
Nanda nandana by Pallavur Mani Iyer
Kitta nerugi vara by Gopalakrishma Bharati
In Krishnaveni there are only two songs.
Mahishasura mardhani (composer not known) and Vishva devam ganapatim by R.K.Suryanarayana
A number of songs in Mechabauli include Devi divyanama sundari by Krishnasvami Ayya, Kanti ma ramulanu by Bhadrachalam Ramdas, Yake maimarade by Vadirajasvami and Ganapati by Bangalore Mukund.

The last song Ganapati by Bangalore Mukund is in Suposhini.

Lakshman Thanks.
Isn't Chayavati the asampurna name for Suryakantham ? Also can you clarify how different Desaakshi is from Bilahari ? There exist also some entities ShailaDesaakshi and NarayanaDeshaakshi ? Thanks for any info.

Nadopasaka:
Deshaksi is again one of those ragas with multiple scales. Here they are:
mela 28
S R G P D S; S N D P M G R S (Nadamuni Panditar)
S R G P D S; S N D M G M R S (Tachur Brothers)
S R G M P D S; S N D M G M R S (T.Singaracharlu)
mela 29
S R G P D S; S N D P M G R S (R.R.Keshavamurti)
mela 35
S R G P D S; S N D P M G M R S (Nadamuni Panditar)
S R G P D S; S N D M G M R S (R.R.Keshavamurti)
S R G P D S; S N D P M G R S ((R.R.Keshavamurti)
S R G M D S; S N D P M G M R S (P.Sambamurti)
mela 48
S R G P D S; S N D P M G M R S (T.Singaracharlu)
Chayavati is the asampurna mela equivalent of Suryakanta.
Other songs in Narayanadeshakshi are: Shankaranarayanam bhaje-Dikshitar, O jagadamba-Wadiar, and a couple of gitams.
In Shailadeshakshi, apart from Dikshitar's Shaila rajakumari and Shri shulini, the only sony I have is Sarasakshi by the Tanjavur Quartette.

what exactly a rare raga mean according to u?

G. This is a murky area. Musicians may have different ideas than lay listeners or even advanced rasikas who are confined to listening only in kutcheries. In turn audience ( or the mean/average of the audience ) capacity and expectation does affect raaga choices that appear on pre-recorded tapes. But the statistical number of times a raaga is performed in a kutchery cannot be the sole indicator that the raaga is incapable of , as you put it, 'being derived'. Music teachers and composers ( and musicologists ) experiment continually every moment with lots of material.

G. Om Namo Narayana was mentioned in Lakshmans list for Karnaranjani ( along with another AKrishna composition ( in Hindi, I think ) which was given above.

Lakshman, Since we are on the D's, what are Divyamani and DvaitaPanchamam or is it DhautaPanchamam ? Thanks
- From: Lakshman (@ ppp2560.on.bellglobal.com)
on: Mon Mar 20 12:04:24 EST 2000
Nadopasaka:
Divyamani is melakarta #48 and the Dikshitar school equivalent is Jivantini. Dhautapanchama is the 69th mela of Dikshitar system and is the equivalent of Dhatuvardhani in the katapayadi system.

nandini:
The song japata japata hari nama manuja by Svati tirunal is in Todi in the book that I have.
Dipaka is a janya of mela 51 and the scale is S R M P D P S; S N D N P M G R S. Tyagaraja has a song Kalalanerchina in this raga. There is also Iruvar mayalo by Arunagirinathar.
Apart from the song by Pallavi Shesha Iyer (who ‘discovered’ this raga) I have a tillana Tatta dhimta tana by Vinai Shesha Iyer.
In Gopikavasanta I have Govindarajam bhaje by Krishnasvami Ayya, Pu malar devan pozhindar by Nilakantha Shivan, Samiga rayante by Kshetragna and Sadashiva dinanatha by Bangalore S.Mukund.
Scale details of these ragas are already posted by Isai rasigai.

on: Mon Mar 20 15:07:43 EST 2000
isai rasigai:
The first scale of Gopikavasanta you posted is slightly different from what is given by Subbarama Dikshitar: The notes are exactly the same except the avarohana notes are given as S N D P M G R M G S. The second aro/avaro is by R.R.Keshavamurti. There is a third scale: S M P N D N D S; S N D P M G S. This interpretation is by Nadamuni Panditar.
In another book S M P N D N D S; S N D P M G R S is given (from the book Mahabharata Chudamani. Another version is S G M D P N D N S; S N D P M G S by T.A Sambandamurti and a last one reads S G M P D N S; S N D P M G S (Abraham Panditar).
