I heard a RTP from Sri.Madurai Somu on Shanmugapriya.I consider it's a testimony of the genius of Madurai Somu.
It's a lon....g pallavi and the pallavi goes like this. I rmemeber the first few words only. Will try to get the rest tomorrow...
"Maa Madurai Arasaalum Meenakshi Maragathaangi..."
IMO ,he used too many words to skectch the raaga and that was kind of dragging ( u know some words were clearly "insertions" to fit the taala pattern).
Choosing a short pallavi (max of 6 / 7 words ) may be interesting ....
Just a offshoot thought, I wanted to share with you all..!

I heard a concert by Unnikrishnan last year in the US and man, never knew he had that much of talent. He sang a wonderful pallavi in Surutti.. Never knew he could elaborate on a Raga like Surutti and sing a pallavi in it ::))
He made an interesting point that in olden days there was a tradition in which the artist would sing RTP in the same raagam as that of the Varnam in the concert. He sang Surutti varnam and the RTP in surutti.. that was a treat to ears :)
Infact that particular day, Unni was amazing as he sang for 4 hours and rendered only like 8 krithis. Elaborated Harikhaambodhi, Mukhari and Surutti... really good ::))
I have heard "Akhilandeswari" as an RTP by TNS - simply superb... I have also seen musicians picking the first line of a few well known krithis as their Pallavi line... "Entharo mahaanu bhaavulu", etc.
Chaarumathi picks the first few words from a bunch of songs and comes up with a Ragamalika pallavi featuring Ragas of all those songs.. that was really good ... (Raamabhiraama - Maamava Pattabhirama - Rama ni samaana ) or something like that - dont remember exactly the pallavi line....

I recently listened to some RTP tapes my dad sent from india.....unni has sung Keeravani, Sowmya - hindolam, Nithyaashree-bhairavi,sanjay - chakravagam......
Found that Unni has improved in these few yrs....the keeravani was very good....he also sings the Thaanam in Raagamalika...that is new!
Sowmya & sanjay are good too.....ofcourse nithya's Bhairavi has always been my FAV. You should listen to her RTP in Bhairavi LIVE!

Nandini, I believe singing/playing thanams in ragamalika has been around for a while. I have heard Karaikudi Sambasiva Iyer play Pancha thaanam (Gana Raagas) along with the main raga of his RTP. KVN sings RagaMaalika thaanam. MLV used to sing ragamalika thanam and so does TNS.

There is a Cassette by LGJ called "Mohana Ranjani" where the RTP is played in both these Ragams and the swarams are played alternately in these two ragas. The rendition of this RTP is brilliant.
I have a live recording of KVN where Trichy Sankaran (My guess) accompanies KVN on the Mridangam during the Thanam. People tell me that this was prevalent during olden days. Why is this not followed now a days? Can someone explain

Mridhangists still accompany vocalists during the Navaraathri festival in Trivandrum Palace..
Other than that I have seen some of them play occasionally...

I once heard L Subramaniam play a thanum with
morsing (just simple beat) accompaniment.

Was this under duress, Nick ? Many aspiring kutchery performers in the West have trouble coordinating and logistically with good and reliable accompaniment. (Not every one can be like Bob Dylan)
