Strictly adhering to melakarthas, some of them are only rarely sung, even the non-vivadhi melas. Looks like there are many melas which have the "potential" to be explored, yet doesnt get much attention. I dont want this topic to be confused with "Rare ragas" started by Rajaraman. Its about Melakartha ragas and why some of them arent popular (in contrast to rare ragas where we discuss unheard of ragas). By unexplored I mean we dont have much "swara-patterns" sung by performers.

For eg, while HK & Shankarabharanam though differing only in Ni has been explored a lot, the same cannot be said about Dhenuka (wrt Thodi) or Vakulabharanam (wrt MMG) or Sarasangi (wrt MMG differing in Ga). Another ex, Kharaharapriya has been a popular one, while its pratimadhyama Hemavathi isnt as popular. But same cannot be said about MMG/Pantuvarali both of which we have elaborate aalapanas by every one in industry. One more ex, Shanmukhapriya is popular but not Natabhairavi per se (oh well, looks like Bhairavi "swallowed" natabhairavi) Are modern performers 'reluctant' to go into these ragas? There are a few "thukadas" sung, still RTP - the real gem, is rare.
