He is indeed one of the Greatest Composers in Music History. I am in a process of collecting and learning his works (trying to !!!). This page is for posting information about references to audio clips of Dikshitar krithis so that it will be of much use to Dikshitar "fans" like myself.

What are the 'sapta-sthana' referred to in the Pranatarthi Haram Nayaki kriti ?

Nadopasaka >> That could be a reference to the saptavitanka sthalas.Because Vishnu worshipped them and then gave them to Indra and then it went to Mucukunda.hence vAsudeva pUjita

OK,
The sivaPantuvarali of MD, Pasupatishwaram has a unique feature...the pallavi , anupallavi and charanamm each begin with the 'Pa' syllable ( Pasupati, PaschimaKashmira, and Paakashaashanaadi.. and it seems also the "Pa" swara. The same occurs with the Naata 'Parameswaram' but with 'Sambasadaashivaaya' in Kamboji, it appears the shadja may be different for charanam.
In a few other krities ( such as Madhurambaaya in Begada, ShivaKameshwari ( Kalyani ) one in Narayanadesakshi and Surati , maybe 1-2 more) the swara-akshara is not obeyed for Pallavi, anupallavi and charanam but starting syllables are the same. ( discounting samashti charana krities )
We had earlier seen that all the three MD Junjhuti krities pallavis arose from the 'Ga' syllable and the 'Ga' swara as well.

Nado, Panini : Sapta-sthana refers to a festival held every Chitra-Pournami in Thiruvaiyaru, where the deities(Panchanadeeshwara and Dharmasamvardhani) are taken on a procession to 6 temples around Thiruvaiyaru (Kandiyur, Vedikkudi etc) and return the next morning. These are different from the 7 vitanka-kshetras.

Rajani, thanks but as Paanini points out the appearance of the 'Vasudeva' word may need to be clarified in connection with the Pranatartihara deity. The Dikshitar seems quite meticulous about the shrine details and individual legends.
Even in the minor raagas gems like Kanchadalaayadaakshi or Shri Guruguha Taaraya appear to have been born perfect. Is there any historical evidence of MD himself making alterations to any kritis ( are the different paataantarams an indication of this ?.)

I think someone may have brought this up before. Do each of the Navagrahas have an associated 'mantra' and does MD report this mantra name ?
He seems to mention a different color , the rashyaadhipati and name of the day etc. ( maybe even a food offering ) in each kriti but apart from the mantras Saurastar, Kayaana, Krunvan and maybe 1-2 more I am not sure.

How is the ragam calanAtta ie the mela sung?
Is it with the sampoorna scale? especially in practical singing.
I heard that for this ragam alone the practitioners of the so-called sampoorna mela system advocate that the arohana and avarohana
is not the best way of singing it?

I've seen at some places some dikshitar kriti's
(pavanAtmajAgachcha ?) being labelled as'chalanATa'. However for MD, the
36th mELa is nATa and not chalanATa. And his mELas
are sampoorna but need not be krama sampoorna.
So probably Koteeshwara Ayyar will be the first
to compose in ChalanAta as we know it ( Krama sampoorna both in ascent and descent)

Chalanata is sampoorNa - sampoorNa both in
arOhad and avarOhaNa. Since it is a 'cooked up'
mELa (say like Gamanashrama and Harikamboji),
it wouldbe best to avoid the prajogas of its
more ancient janya nATa. Nata with Da and Ga
varjya in avarOha and with mostly with ocassional
prayOgas taking Da in ascent, sort of force
ChalanATa to take a krama sampoorna descent, to
make it distinct from nATa.
I have not listened to Koteeshwara ayyars kriti
but have listened to BMK's 'nagAtmaja manOharam'.
It follows krama sampoorNa prayogas both in
Aroha and avarOha

Koteeswara Iyers "Edayya Gati" is fully sampoorna in nature and Acharya's Raga Alapana of Chalanattai bears enough testimony to this.If Mr.Panini could mail me I could send him Rajam's
rendering of this.NLV has rendered this very well.I think i recently heard S.Gayathri sing this.Yhis is a detailed alap of CN.

KVR points out that MD's Naata's are not CalaNaata. In this context it may be noted that 3 of the Dikshitars Naata krities use the word 'Kaavya Naata-ka' for the mudra so that the word Cala-Naata is only a remnant from either the Venkitamakhi scheme or the Samgraha Chudamani.

Is the Pancharatna JagadaanandaKaaraka in Naata also ? 'Idi samayamu ', also of Tyagaraja seems to be in Chaaya-Naata as given in the Spirit. Herit. book. Maybe this is a typo and should be Chala-Naata ? ( there is however a raga ChaayaNat, probably some recent fusion experiment )

OK.
In the last of the Kamalambika Nvvrna ( in Ahiri ) the devi is supposedly reclining on a couch of the Sivas form. Is there an idol of this shape in Tiruvarur ? The Shri chakra word is 'sarva-anandamaya' for this kriti.

No there is no idol of this in Tiruvarur. However this is the kameshwari-kameshwara form of shrividya upasana.

This seems to be in line with the use 'Kaama-kalaa pradarshini' that appears a few other places too. Why is only the Kamalambika devi form considered within the complete ShriVidya cycle ?

re: 'Kaala danda paripeedita Jaanum', Jaanu is knee ( see also Jaanustha-hasta , the unique hands-on-the-knee posture also in Surati Mangala Navagraha, maybe also for one of the devis ) .
It seems in mythology that Saturns knee was hurt by Yama's staff ( not sure whether this was deliberate ) , resulting in his slow motion, which the Dikshitar embeds in the words and tempo of the pallavi including 'Shanais-chara'.
RaviKiran, this might be more like shedding some darkness instead of light but the rings of Saturn could be the result of some large cosmic impact, probably a comet or a black hole, to satify the Yama symbolism. Shani is also described as the offspring of Surya and Chaayadevi, ( diwakara-tanujam and chaayadevi-sunam

re..' Part 1 and KMB's statement on the existence of a kriti for each of the Lalita sahasranaama names'.
the Begada Shrimaata's anupallavi itself begins with another name of the Lalita devi ShriMahaaRaagyni, therefore the one-to-one correspondence of one name to one kriti is unjustified.
Other names e.g. 'Shri Vaagbhavakuta' in the Bhajare chita Kalyani or 'Karpura-vitikaayai in the Kaamboji also do not start their respective pallavis.
It should first be interesting to see if all the LS names appear in the existing krities before suggesting that there is a separate one beginning with each name. (especially names such as the one referring to the softness of her thighs... known only to Kaameshvara )
