Gamakas are svara embellishment with specific types of quivering or shaking, Inter svara transitory phrases and svara overtones etc.
The Natyashastra lists up to 15 types, e.g. Kampita, andholita, mudrita, sphurita.

"Gamaka could be described in a lay man's term as an ornamentation of a swara" It brings out the jeevan of a raagam. I once happened to listen to a demo by Bombay Jayshree. She made a very beautiful distinction between Kalyani(carnatic style) and Yaman(Hindusthani style) by the presence and absence of gamakaas (of course, I do not mean to say that kalyani = yaman!). I think gamakas add beauty to carnatic music while extended sanchaaram on a particular swaram/note adds beauty to Hindusthani music.

Hi, If simply explains Gamaka is a toandfro osilation of any note. All the global music has Gamaka's i.e. toandfro osilations. But in Indian style only they leed or active a prime role. Now we are using ten gamakas. In Tamil my guruji wrote a book called KARNA'TAKA ISAIL GAMAKA SWARNGALAI PADUVADU E'PPADI means How you can render gamaka notes in karnatic style. It is a research book not only for vocal it's explains gamaka structure for every instruments. Singing or playing gamakas is a not a easy job. but Natyachryaji explained and shoot as a VCD for the abroad students. It is available at natyachrya@vsnl.com or shiv_ranjani@yahoo.com

It should also be noted that there are ragas like Garudadhwani which actually minimise gamaka. Also there exist kampavihina prayogas, i.e prayogas without gamaka, in ragas like Bahudari. Another example is of Manji which differs in type of gamaka taken as well as those not allowed (pratyahaata), from Bhairavi ( although they share the same svaras )

The so-called English word 'GIMMICK' may have its origin in the word 'GAMAKA'.
Most online dictionaries indicate an unknown source for this word.
