Lakshman:
Can you explain, compare and contrast Yaman and Yamuna Kalyani as used in carnatic with examples of songs?
Who was the first to compose raga-combos like Mohana Kalyani?
Would you mind questions involving carnatic raga- based film songs? If not, was "mullai malar mElE" in uthama puthiran based on kanada or Darbari kanada?

RR: You are right about posting answers here. The following is what I sent to you.
Yaman is the Hindustani equivalent of the Karnatak raga Kalyani. It uses pratimadhyama (F# in western notation) and is the counterpart of Shankarabharana (uses shuddha madhyama or F natural)
Yamunakalyani , on the other hand, uses both the madhyams. Mohanakalyani has notes of Mohana in the arohana and Kalyani in the avarohana. The hindustani equivalent is Shuddhkalyan.
I am not too keen on film songs. Darbarikanada (hindustani) and Kanada (karnatak) are similar but with some differences.
Examples of songs:
Kalyani - Some 450 odd songs on ny list. I don't know which ones to list. Perhaps Nidhichala sukhama by Tyagaraja and Vasudevayani (popularized by GNB) is also by Tyagaraja.
A well known song in Yamunakalyani is Krishna ni begane baro by Vyasaraya. Also Bhavayami gopalabalam by Annamacharya.
Songs in Mohanakalyani - Bhuvaneshvariya by Muttiah Bhagavatar and there is a tillana (taka jhanuta dhim) by Lalgudi Jayaraman.
Kanada - Sukhi evaro by Tyagaraja, Mamava sada janani by Svati Tirunal, Gauri nayaka (tillana) by Maha Vaidyanatha Iyer set to the rare tala of Simhanandana. In Darbari Kanada a tillana has been composed by S.Kalyanaraman.
Hope this will be of help. Let me know if you need more info. Lakshman

Thiagarajan:
Rageshri is a hindustani raga. Three different scales are used. 1. S G2 M1 D2 N3 S; S N3 D2 M1 G2 R2 S, 2. S G2 M1 D2 N3 S; S G2 M1 D2 N2 S; S N3 D2 M1 G2 R2 S, 3. S G2 M1 D2 N3 S; S N2 D2 N3 D2 M1 G2 R2 S. Ravichandrika is the closest equivalent. It uses S R2 G M1 D2 N2 D2 S; S N2 D2 M1 G2 R2 S. Natakuranji has two arohana/avarohana versions. 1. S R2 G M1 D2 N2 S; S N2 D2 M1 G2 S.
2. S R2 G2 M1 N2 D2 N2 P D2 N2 S; S N2 D2 M2 G2 M1 P M1 G2 R2 S. Bageshri (also a hindustani raga originally) has the scale S R2 G2 M1 D2 N3 S; S N3 D2 P D2 N3 D2 M1 G2 R2 S.

Someone asked me why the words Pallavi and Charanam are used to denote the first part and the third part of the sahitya. In other words, how did these words originate? Maybe some of you experts out there can provide an answer!

Lakshman
Wondering if you can help with these, please.
[1] Can you confirm that 'Krishna nee begane' is not by Kanakadas ? I saw here it was by Vyasaraya.
[2]Is the Ramaswamy Sivan mudra 'guruguha'
or is this the mudra of Maha Vaidyanath Iyer ( his brother )as Prof. Sambamurty suggests. The Kadaikkan begada has neraval on a phrase with guhadasa in it.
[3]Although there are the 5 well known PANCHA-ratna krities of Tyagaraja, is there a related and similar significance ( say at aradhana sabhas ) attached to his krities Gitarthamu (surati) and Gurulekha ( devamanohari ).
[4] I have heard BMK do what I thought was a reasonable job with Begada using 'Vande Namava sala' by Purandaradasa. Can you confirm whether this is the original raga for the kriti ? BMK can get very clever ( and confusing ) with his own tunings although in this particular piece the composition does sit very well in Begada, indeed.
thanks

Nadopasaka:
Krishna ni begane baro is a composition of Vyasaraya.
Both Ramasvami Shivan and his brother Maha Vaidyanatha Iyer used the mudra Guhadasa. Muttusvami Dikshitar and Ambi Dikshitar have used the Guruguha muudra.
Gitarthamu is sung because it is in Surati, a raga that is supposed to be soothing to the mind. As well, as Govinda Rao puts, it "it wards off the effects of evil eyes". Guruleka in Gaurimanohari pays homage to the teacher.
Most songs of Purandaradasa are sung in ragas diifferent from those that existed during the time of Purandaradasa. Over the years new ragas are substituted. This is starting to happen to Tyagaraja' songs. The song Manasuloni was composed in Hindola but many sing it in Varam (Shuddha Hindola)nowadays. The song Jnana mosagarada was originally supposed to have been composed in Shadvidhamargini but is now sung in Purvikalyani.

With Vande Namava I wanted to be sure it was by Purandaradasa, (the Purandara vittala mudra does appear). Is it possible to know what the original raga was , if not Begada ?
Thanks

Although I have over a thousand kritis of Purandaradasa on my list Vande namava ,unfortunately, is not one of them. If you could give me the full pallavi line I might be able to ask others and try to find out. Thanks.

Would you have some idea of krities by Sadashiv Brahmendra ? Was he a contemporary of Purandaradasa or Annamacharya ?
Thanks
Manasa sancharare in Sama of his appears now and then.
- From: Lakshman (@ ppp2536.on.bellglobal.com)
on: Sat Feb 19 09:53:59 EST 2000
Nadopasaka:
Sadashiva Brahmendra lived around the mid 16th century. Born in 1560 he was supposed to have lived a very long life (R.Kalyanasundaram-Tava shelvargal varalaru)of 200 (?) odd years. His contemporaries were Narayana Tirtha, Bodhendrasvami, Shridhara ayya, Marudanallur Sadgurusvami. He composed in Samskrit. About 25 kritis are in publication. Popular ones are Bhajare gopalam (hindola), Bhajare yadunatha (pilu), Smaravaram varam (kapi), Khelati mama hrdaye (athana), Manasa sancharare (sama), Bruhi mukundeti (kurinji), Gayati vanamali (Shuddhasavaeri), Pibare ramarasam (ahirbhairav).

Any ideas why Tiger Varadachary got his name ? I heard he used to ferociously claw the air while singing.
- From: Lakshman (@ ppp2612.on.bellglobal.com)
on: Tue Feb 22 16:24:48 EST 2000
Nadopasaka:
That is not quite true. He had stayed in Mysore for many years and Maharaja Krishnaraja Wadiar honoured him with 'Thodas" and conferred on him the title 'Tiger'. Some people associated 'Tiger' with the 'gambhira dhvani' he demonstrated when singing. This style was passed on to MDR who was one of his disciples.

What is the maximum number of bhaashaanga swaras that known raagas take ? I think Ataana takes at least 2. Thanks
- From: Lakshman (@ hse-kit-ppp38831.sympatico.ca)
on: Wed Feb 23 09:27:59 EST 2000
Nadopasaka:
In bhashanga ragas one, two or three (maximum) foreign notes may be used. Ragas like Bhairavi, Kambhoji and Mukhari take one. Athana uses two. Hindustanikapi makes use of three. In the case of two or three foreign notes they may be from different melas. A raga like Bilahari uses the bhashanga note in sancharas only and not in the main scale.
You had asked why raga Mohana is placed in Harikambhoji mela rather than in Shankarabharana. It is because as a general rule a bhashanga raga is put in the first possible mela of the 72 melakarta system which, in this case, is Harikambhoji. Affinity to particular melas - example Malahari, suitable shrutis in the janya ragas and the history behind the development of the janya ragas are factors which determine the placement of a particular bhashanga raga.

Thanks greatly, Lakshman
I saw Mohana listed as janya of Mechakalyani on one of the Dikshitar lists on the web ( the mohan synflux site ). What is the bhashanga swara in Mohana ?
Can you also comment on Begada Ma and Todi Ri ? I heard they were difficult to pin down.
