I was going thru earlier topics which came up for discussion and observed a thread on Ghazals (June 99). The Ghazal enthusiast was promptly shown the door with a snide remark 'What is a topic on light music doing in this forum?'. The other posting on the subject was 'Let this be discussed in International Music Forum'.
If Ghazal is 'light music' what are 'Thukkadas' sung towards the close of the Katcheri?. If the soulful Ghazals of the Nawab Wajid Ali Shah of Oudh (dating back to 1800s) and Mirza Galib are not 'Indian' and have to be discussed only in 'Internation Music Forum', what else is Indian Music?

As they say: everything has its place and the place to discuss ghazals is not in the classical music forum but in rec.indian.music.misc
As for the 'tukkadas' in a concert you are aware that they are sung in classical ragas something, akin to chota khayals. Ghazals, in most cases, do not follow classical raga patterns and that is the reason why this topic belongs in a different category. One is most welcome to discuss on raga, khayal, dhrupad, dhammar etc., here because they are part of a hindustani music concert.

As Lakshman Says, Ghazals are NOT accepted as CLASSICAL Music and cannot be classified in the same section where Carnatic and Hindustani Music are being discussed. It certainly is INDIAN music but unfortunately not accepted as CLASSICAL music as they do not follow the proper musical "grammer". I think we need to have another section in the forum to discuss non-classical non-light music.
As regards to "Thukkadas", i can add something to what Lakshman says...
There is nothing called as a Thukkadaa... the name comes only from recent times... may be a part of the current form of the Classical Concert. I have heard to many stalwarts singing some of the so called "Thukkadaas" as main piece in many classical carnatic concerts.

This has reference to Both your and Lakshman's remarks on ghazals. Mehdi Hassan , Ghulam Ali , farida khanum are all established gahzal singers of pakistan and have made a conscious effort to propogate hindustani classical music through ghazals. mehdi hassan's ghazals are known as "lassical ghazals" and invariably has a detailed raga alapanai of known ragas like yaman, keerwani et al and lesser known ragas like "Bhoopkali" which is Vasanthi for us(Mohanam with shudha dhaivatham). Not sure if i have ever heard a detailed treatment of vaasanthi here. Ghulam ali learnt under none other than khansahib base ghulam ali khan and mehdi hassan sang pure classical to about 25 years!Their rendering gives us new insights into known ragas ans they explore unexplored areas of common ragas like mohanam (bhoop/deshkar), malkauns, chandrakauns (which unfortunately is taken as a parellel for Kalyna vasantham which is 'Shyam Kauns' with Keerwani proper in avarohanam).Perhaps ghazal gayaki deserves a closer look
