Is Gamagakriya Gamanasrama? This doubt arose because MD has sung in Poorva Kalyani as well(PDPS)and all grammar books give Gamagakriya of the Venkatamaki school of thought's equivalent as modern Gamanasrama. Then why is Gamagakriya sung as PuriKalyani?

Gamagakriya is the 53rd melam as per venkatamakhin school and gamanasrama is the 53rd as per the Sampoorna scheme. They are not the same.
MD has not sung in Poorvikalyani but in Gamagakriya. (Gamagakriys is an equivalent of Poorvikalyani)

My book of MD's Kriti notations by Ramanuja Iyangar has songs in Poorva Kalyani as well as Gamagakriya.Note that MD called it Poorva Kalyani and not PoorviKalyani. How come 2 names for the same Raga by one composer?Poorva Kalyani also has SRGMPDPS in arohanam and sampoorna 'nd in the avarohanam set to Gamanasrama scale!

As far as i know, Dikshitar has not composed in Poorva Kalyani. He has composed in Poorvi. I dont know why RRI calls it as Poorva kalyani. There are the foll. krithis in Gamagakriya.
1. Kasivisalakshi
2. Navaratnamaalineem
3. Tiruvateeswaram
4. Ekamranatham
5. Meenakshi
This list is based on the SSP and book by Sri T K G Rao. Must be that Poorvakalyani is another name for Gamagakriya.

Thanks for your response.
The following Kritis (and their ragas) are by MD in the area of interest.
Kasi Visaalaksheem-Gamagakriya
Navaratna Malineem-Poorva Kalyani
Meenaksi Me Mutam-Poorva Kalyani
Ekambranatham-Poorva Kalyani
Sri Grurguhasya Daasoham-Purvi
Note that Gamagakriya(which I feel is Gamanasrama)and Purva Kalyani have the same scale.Perhaps Gamagakriya must be treated as Sampoorna Raga.Purvi is MayaMalavaGowla
Janyam with Shudha Madhyamam. The scale is SRGMPDNS(Arohanam) and SNDPDMGRS(Avarohanam)
What is more interesting is whether in The Venkatamakhi Asampoorna Paddhati the Janaka ragas have Vakra Prayogam !Let me know of any Raaganga Ragam in Vakra Scale!Does Mahaganapathim in Nattai have the Shatshruti Dhaivatham proyagam especially in 'Mahaadevasutam '?

Kartik,
>>>Meenaksi Me Mutam-Poorva Kalyani<<<
mInAkshI mE mudam dEhi has the rAga mudra as gamakakriya ( dashagamakakriyE ).
As to ur question on vakra scales, examples are shree (22) and (tOya)vEgavAhini ( 16 ) - in vINApustakadhAriNIm in vegavahini for eg, sancharas have 'SMGM'

As per the Sangeeta Sampradaya Pradarshini, the scale of gamakakriya is srgmpds-sndpmgrs

S:>>Thanks for your response. In DasaGamagakriye "Da Sa" is a Swara Sahityam if i am not wrong. In that case SRGMPDS/SNDPMGRS can be accepted as the Raga Arohana and Avaroham. It perhaps would then Gamagakriya is neither Gamansrama nor Purvi Kalyani. We could then dicuss at a greater depth. Please the "Meenakshi me Mutam" notation as i possess only the notation of RRI.

Kartik: The DaSa is actually dasha (ten). There are 10 types of gamakas mentioned in music books.

It is somewhat surprising (for me!) to know that
the SSP gives arohaNa dor Gamakakrita as srgmapds.
I think srgmds - sndmgrs would be more apt with
ocassional pdp sancharas.
The rAgalakshaNa anubandha of CP however does
not say anything about gamakakriya except that
it is a sarvakalika rAga !

KVR : there were quite a few PDS phrases in the notation - which r different in the book - but seem to have been brought around to mainstream poorvikalyani in popular versions heard ( shall post details after referring the SSP ). Moreover, having an arohanam SRGMPDS would not disallow MDS as it is merely a panchama varjya phrase.
Kartik, to my knowledge, the 'dasha' phrase is rendered as g, m, - shall check up in SSP and let u know.

KVR>>Please refer to the old responses in the thread on MD.I have spoken about Muthaiah Bhagavathar's findings on an ancient Raga which had SRGMDNS and SNDMGRS with occassional Panchama prayogas(which is of course no longer in vogue in modern Hamsanandi). So your suggested scale is akin to ancient Hamsanandi and much lesser to Gamagakriya!Experts please comment
