Radhika Murthy...
Thank you for the information on Rama Varma. That he is now a devoted student of BMK may be enough to cause a few people around here not to want to listen to him!
I have heard him [RV] sing here in London a number of times and both much enjoyed and been much moved by his performances. One thing that I appreciate about his style is his willingness to take a song slowly.

It is quite interesting that the lists above seem to only mention once a female CM performer, MaliniH. ( notwithstanding the proponents of the Hindustani violinist NRajam )
Can the Sikkil sisters or CharumatiR or the so-called Delhi sisters qualify in this somewhat irrelevant list ?

Nado, would the list become more "RELEVANT", if it were Tamil Nadu or Andhra or Timbuctoo instead of Kerala?????

The topic is connected with Kerala musicians .So it will be out of place if we add Charumathy Ramachandran who is from Tamilnadu.

As Nado rightly said, this list is "irrelevant"! For crying out loud, we are talking about Carnatic Music and musicians which has no place for regionalistic drivel!

Ok... for those who find some relevance for this discussion, here's an interesting article. Quite long, but provides some interesting insights into Kerala's music scene and greats like SSI, GNB, Chembai, MDR, etc.

I recently heard a tape of one Krishna Kumar from Trivandrum. His recent audio cassette "Rare Ragas" has an excellent Vagadiswari (Paramathmudu), Bhushavali (Gopa nandana), and Navarasakannada (Lambodara sodara). He did an RTP in Nasikabhushini in a recent US concert tour. I saw his name in the Madras season concerts as Trivandrum Krishnakumar. I understand his initial training was from Balamuralikrishna.

Mahakavi K.V. Simon was a star in the galaxy of Malayalam literature, with commendable skill in
Malayalam, Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu etc. He
composed many devotional (Christian) compositions
in Carnatic and Hindustani Ragas.
Perhaps the most well known Carnatic musician
in Kerala is Semmangudi from the next state!

VJ,
Are the devotionals sung by any musician today? Are Mahakavi Simon's works(devotionals)anthologised? Recently. I purchased an album brought out by the Christian Musiological Society of India (Aluva based) This album contains X'ian classicals sung by George Panjara; the kritis are in highly sanskritised malayalam. I found the first two pieces quite good. If you are intersted in buying them I'll give you the address. It is featured on any online shopping malls. Do you know of any such X'ian devotionals in Indian classical music streams? I've heard of some by Fr. Porsch in Hindustani.

What about Thulaseevanam, a prolific composer, who has composed Sanskrit krithis on various deities, including some local temples like the Pazhavangadi Ganapathi, etc? I have heard a few audio recordings of his compositions by T.V.Sankaranarayanan (ganapathi songs), T.N.Seshagopalan (Venkatachalapathi songs), Maharajapuram Santhanam (Ayyappan songs), Dr. S. Ramanathan (Vishnu Nava Vidha Bhakti krithis), and so on. He uses the mudra "thulasi" in all his krithis.

Hello Siby, Please give the title of George Panjara's album and URL/address where I can buy
it.
Mahakavi's work must be available through book stalls in Kerala. Try CLS.
There is a recently released album of Mahakavi's compositions titled "Mangalam Bhava" and sung by
Binoy Chacko et al.
Some pieces are sung in purely Carnatic style.
Most of the old Malayalam devotional songs are
in Carnatic and Hindustani Ragas.
For e.g. "Parama dayalo padam vandaname ..."
is a Hindustai piece.
The Orthodox Hindi liturgy is purely in
Hindustani. Recording is available now.

PPN, Re: Thulaseevanam... There is a "Theerthapaada" Sangeethotsavam in Trivandrum, around Vishu every year, which is where I first heard these "Thulaseevanam" krithis. The local grapevine has it that this "Thulaseevanam" is a proxy for Ramachandran Nair, an ex-Kerala IAS officer who organizes the festival. (The man is a bit of a controversial figure in Kerala and was recently indicted by a court in a real estate case related to the Sri Shankara Sanskrit University). He may or may not have contributed to the creation of these krithis, but I understand that the late Dr. S. Ramanathan and several others have contributed to the composing/tuning of these songs. Very eminent vidwaans used to participate in the annual music festival (and still do, if I'm not mistaken) and local rasikas used to snidely remark that they sang a few "thulasi" krithis to appease the top honcho!! :-) Dr. Bhagyalekshmy, a frequent contributor to this forum, might be able to educate us more on this!!
(The mudra is "Vana thulasee...")

I had the impression Tulasivanam was a female composer. TVS sings these compositions once in a while.

Dear VJ, There was a typo in my last post. It should have been: It is NOT featured on any online shopping mall. I'll give you the address, please hold on. I'm facing some net connetion problems now. If you can send me a mail to sebank@chequemail.com I'll reply with the address. Otherwise keep checking the thread for my next post.

Thulaseevanam is the same man, former Chief Secretary of Kerala who was recently indicted by the court in the Sanskrit University land scam.

To
Mr. Ramanathan
I would like to give certian real facts of the great carnatic music composer of Kerala THULASIVANAM . Thulasivanam is the pen name of Shri. R.Ramachandran Nair I.A.S. I am the founder Secretary of Thulaseevana Sangita Parishat and under the auspices of our organisation the compositons of Thulasivanam is being pouplarised and the L.P. records, cassettes etc . of the compositions of Thulasivanam are sung by great Vidwans . Thulasivanam is a great Sanskrit and malayalam scholar . His interest for Carnatic Music inspired him to compose sanskrit kritis in the name of various deities of Kerala and other leading temples of India . He has composed songs on VIGNESWARA of Pazhavangadi temple at Trivandrum which has been sung by Sri. T.V.Sankaranarayanan , Compositons in praise of Sri Padmanabha Swamy of Trivandrum and the songs are rendered by Sri. Trichur V.Ramachandran , Compositions in praise of Sri Ayyappa of Sabarimalai sung by Late Maharajapuram Santhanam , compositions in praise of Manjunatha Swamy of Dharmasthala sung by sri. Banglore R.K.Srikantan , Compositions in praise of Lord Krishna ( HARI BHAKTHI NAVAKAM ) the nine gems sung by Late Dr. S.Ramanathan , Compositions in praise of Lord Venkateswara of Trupati sung by Sri. T.N.seshagopalan . All the L.P. records and cassettes are released by AVM , Madras . Your comment that since he was indicted in a land case by the Vigilence Court , He may or may not created the compositons . Your view is absolutely wrong . He is the man who has given birth to all the compositions which has the pen name VANATHULASI , THULASI ETC. We all know that great personalities are often criticised for no fault of theirs . Sri. Thulasivanam is a great author who has authored many books , KADHAKALI STORY ,( PARVATHY PARINAYAM , KARTHIKEYA VIJAYAM , BHATTARAKA VIJAYAM , ETC. ) THE book SIVASTHAVA MANJERI is the slokas in praise of Ettumanoorappan of Ettumanoor in Kerala . I HAVE A REQUEST LET US NOT MIX POLITICS WITH MUSIC .THE CASES CAN BE DECIDED BY THE HIGHER COURTS . BUT THE GREAT EFFORTS OF A GREAT SCHOLAR ALWAYS REMAINS .

Mr. Balasubramaniam, I'm afraid you misunderstood me completely. I never made any association between the land scam and the literary abilities of Mr. Nair.
As for his greatness and musicological skills... even Maharaja Swathi Thirunal is the subject of much discussion and criticism (as we have often seen in this discussion forum and elsewhere). So I fail to understand why there should be such a hue and cry when a few questions are raised about this Thulaseevanam!! :-)
