Concert Reviews - 1998 Concert Reviews

It will be nice for us all to discuss the various Carnatic concerts we attend during the year. I feel that it's a good idea to categorise this by year, starting with 1998, so that we can keep track of what, who saw in which year.

Your postings are inducing nostalgia in me. Did u attend any TVS this season? Most of the artists come to USA( I live in Maryland) but Madras music season is something different.

Ariyakkudi Ramanuja Iyengar and Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer have sung thAnam with thALam(mridangam by Palghat Mani, Vellore Ramabhadran). It is rare but very enjoyable. I have two cassettes. If you want, you can email me your address and tel #, I will be happy to send copies thru my children who are visiting India
( will be in Madras most of the time)- Dec 27 thru Jan 10.

Thanx a lot. I heard TVS this year at Narada gana sabha(i think kamboji was the main.)

I was skeptical as to how much unni's would be of interest to me. After listening to his thodi and RTP in lathangi at Music Academy(jam packed including the dias), my attitude has changed. His alapana and brigas are simply wonderful. After which N.Ramani played with his son and pEran. Three flutes of different lengths playing at harmony with the violin - wonderful experience!(RTP was Behag with kanada, ranjani etc.)

I totally agree with you on Unni. He has been improving consistently. I heard him recently here in U.S. However,in my opinion, his voice has to mature a lot more to reach carnatic concert quality. Hope this will happen with experience. Onething to be said abt Unni is that he seems to be exceptionally sincere. Another thing, in spite of his popularity I have not so far seen any hOdha attititude in him.

Haris- Names of ragas can be learnt by anyone, but enjoying music and sharing it with others seem to be part of your nature which is uncommon. Keep it up.

Chitravina N. Ravikiran was in concert in Dayton, Ohio on the evening of May 6 and gave us yet another enchanting performance on the Chitravina. As part of the North American tour his visit to Dayton was preceded by his direction of a usic-dance production titled, "Cosmos", jointly
created with the Canadian composer Timothy Sullivan.

The concert in Dayton started with Sri Ganapati in Saurashtra, followed by Manaviyala in Nalinakanti. This was followed by Muthuswamy
Dikshitar's masterpiece in Bhairavi, Chintayama kandamoola. Then came Papanasam Sivan's Srinivasa tiru venkata in Hamsaanandi, then Ranganayakam in Nayaki. The Ragam-Thanam-Pallavi was performed next in the Mohana ragam. The melodius Pallavi was composed on the stage itself and had the lyrics, "sada nee pada sarojame gati Srinivasa" . This was followed by a Ragamalika, Teerada vilayatta pillai by Subramanya Bharati.

The concert was superbly supported by Kalpana Venkat of Akron, Ohio on
Violin and Sekhar Atmakuri of Detroit, Michigan on Mridangam. The concert was organized by the Carnatic Music Association of Ohio (CMAO).

I listened to Ravikiran few years back when he performed in Singapore. I dont remember in which raaga RTP was done but he claimed that the pallavi was composed by him on the stage while violin was playing. The performance was wonderful and he got a standing ovation. I think he follows the same gimmic wherever he goes!
