hallo everybody ,
I just read a book by famous western classical meastro - yehudi M. He has compared western and indian classical music in very differnt yet attractive perspective .
He states that the uniqueness of western classical is to produce beats - flow of emotion , breaking of the dark silence . But why indian music is superior ? Bcoz it does All above and later creats a piece of mind that lasts long , creats a fulcrum on which unstabilit of the mind can stay calmly and finally helps to achieve Moksha : ultimate resolution .
I think that this wonderful passege must be passed to as many ppl as possible and hence written
Anyone who would like to add /object/agree/comment on this pls contact me on email

Are you quoting him or writing your interpretation of his writing on Indian music? I have read his books ‘The music of Man’ and ‘Unfinished Journey’ They are full of praises for Indian music especially the Karnatic music. But it does not engage in comparisons of superior and inferior music.
Music is universal. It is beyond the realms of the human discriminatory concepts of superior and inferior. And a music that attempts to attain 'peace of mind' cannot attain moksha, if it deals with ideas of inferiority and superiority.
Moksha after all is a value less state of mind. A state of mind where one does not know high or low, or less or more, or superior or inferior.
The greateness of Indian music is that it is neither superior nor inferior. Which is why it gives 'peace of mind' or moksha.
you will find yehudi menuhin's works on Indian music in the book 'The music of man'. It was made into a documentary on the canadian television. Which was of approximately eight parts.

why is it that one has to show western music or anything western as inferior to feel the greatness of Indian music or anything Indian. A great piece or school of work is great on its own merit, not because it is superior to another piece or school of work.
Indian music is definitely very mathematical, especially carnatic music or south indian music. Menuhin's teacher for yoga and music was Mr. Iyengar. Yehudi Menuhin had worked on the concepts of the raagam and taalam and was astonished by the depth of the mathematical range of the music conceived by the mela kartha raagam. But he also worked on the mathematical counterpoint and fugue of European classical music. Especially that of Bach, as explored in the 'Das woltemperiorate Klavier', or ‘The Well tempered klavier'. Bach incidently was his most faviourite composer besides Mozart, and Beethoven and Brahms.

Hallo robin ,
First of all I wish to thanks u for writing such a wonderful reply --- which reassures that thinking process is still been cherished by few people on this planet
Well , I agree with the first part : Sup/Inf.
My mistake !
But why I wrote ," pass to as many ppl etc "
by diff purpose -- not to show superiority / inferiority but to rather get responses frm ppl whther they really feel such diff .
I felt : Whenever I listen to Western classical
, I feel beutifual aroma , fragnace of emotions , sometimes I even get overfilled with emotions ; May be on the verge of crying / sometimes happy to great extent .
When I feel Indian classical , somehow I don't feel anything ! I go in trans / say a pschologic state which is so hard to describe in words .
Well , Whats ur opinion ? Pls feel free to mail me on my id : dr_ashutosh@rediffmail.com
Lets try together to share / conflict / enjoy limitless and timeless sense of that inner awareness about music
