I just listened to the Kiravani krithi (thyagarajar) --Kalikiyunte katha kalgunu by a VERY FAMOUS YESTERYEAR ARTIST !!

Here is the text of the song and two different meanings. Hope it helps.

pallavi: kaligiyuNTEgadA galgunu kAmita phaladAyaka (kaligi)

Meaning 1: O Rama! Reputed to fill the desires of devotees!
Unless my actions in the past lives had earned enough merit, I will not be destined to have my desires fulfilled! In this kaliyuga, without proper understanding and discrimination, I went to the extent of reproaching you for my plight.
Had I only devoutly worshipped your feet as the cream of devotees like Prahlada, Parashara and Ramadasa did, would you not have ordained a favourable destiny for me?
Meaning 2: Oh! Fulfiller of desires! Your grace will come only if I had earned it by my past merit; in this kali age, without knowing your mind, I reproached you.
Do not tarry; if you had ordained a fair fate for me, your grace will come; if I had practised devotion to Rama's feet as devoutly as the foremost devotees, Narada, Prahlada, Parashara and Ramadasa, I would have earned it (your grace).

I did re-listem carefully, now it looks like the artist really is singing "bAguga" as u have posted.
So does Prof.John Higgins. Probably it's a mind thing , I guess.
My intuitive inference did definitely NOT work on this issue.GOOD LESSON for me!!
Can u explain what "bAguga" MEANS both LITERALLY as well as contextually in this song.
It really is a great experience to appreciate the music knowing the lyrics , meaning & diction.
On a totally different topic, would you know where could I get "Nandanar Sarithram" --the original work by Gopalakrishna Bharathi. Any kind of pointers would help..

Gopal: I have a two part set of Nandanar Charitram by Dr.S.Ramanathan and published by Annamalai University. I believe these are now out of print but you can try Karnatic Music Book Centre, 14 Sripuram 1st street, Royapettah, Chennai 600 014. They might have cpies left over.

There are a lot of kritis, including the pancharatna Jagadanandakaraka, that are not in The Spiritual Heritage book. T.K.Govinda Rao's book also does not contain all the songs. I have the lyrics of 720 of them which include the disputed ones.

Thanks a lot ,Lakshman. I think u are an online knowledge store for Thyagaraja Krithis (may be many other CM greats!).
Here is another one for you.
Can u post the lyrics of Setholara Sringara ...(Bhairavi krithi). Is it originally in Bhairavi or Nata Bhairavi. I recently heard KJY sing it in Nata Bhairavi.Have heard many other sing it Bhairavi. May be they r two different songs? I can't say because I don't know the lyrics/meaning.
The one in Bhairavi means some thing to the order of decorating / dressing up Lord Rama and inviting him...
Incidentally this krithi is played in Flute before starting the Pancha ratna krithis @ Tiruvayarau.

Gopal: The tyagaraja song cEtulAra shrngAramu is sung in Bhairavi usually but some have sung it in Natabhairavi as well as in Kharaharapriya.

I have heard that the Guruleka kriti (DevaManohari)and maybe the Surati Geetarthamu are also specially connected to Aradhana and the standard five in the Ghana ragas. Possibly another one. Maybe some one can confirm and if so give some reason. perhaps a Navaavarana set of some kind ?

no Shyam, you are right, it is GowriManohari, i mistyped. Maybe some one also comment on the madhyamakaala/chitta swaras in the Tyg Pancharatnas ?
