By rare ragas I mean seldom used ragas like soorya, rasikapriya and other ragas like
Poornashadjam that are generally known only
through famous compositions.
First of all, why are these ragas "rare"? I'm
interested in a list compositions based on
such rare ragas and references to rendering of
these ragas.

SudhaMadhuryaBhashini of Tyagaraja appears under something called SindhuRamaKriya, janya of MMGowla. Please check which one you have in VandanaDharini. Thanks

They say haste makes waste. I think haste makes stupidity. I was in a rush to go somewhere but I wanted to get my thoughts out onto the thread. While my mind was thinking Shuddhasaveri my fingers were typing Shuddhadhanyasi. Perhaps I need a holiday from the forum. My apologies.
Sudha madhurya bhashana is a composition of Tyagaraja in Sindhuramakriya, but there is a kriti Sudha madhurya bhasani in Vandanadharini by GNB on my list but I have not found any confirmation for this.

Lakshman: I wont call that haste. I would much rather say that out of our anxiety to share our thoughts and feelings, sometimes we err. (I have done that several times and not even remotely thought of taking a break!!!!!))) That is not a big deal. No vacation for you from the forum. :::))) Your contributions are valuable and makes us think!
I just confirmed: Sudha Maadhurya is a GNB composition. I have heard this VandhanaDharini piece several times (by Trichur Ramachandran) and was not sure about the composer.

Sudhadha Dhanyasi's Pradhdhi Madhyamam is Madhukauns. (Krishna karo Bhajamana Prabhu - meera bhajan) - was breaking my head over this all of last night - trying to remember the raga name ::)))

Hindholam's Kaakali Nishaadha version is Chandrakauns - nobody asked for this :) just thought I would post it as I was getting confused with the "kauns" ragas myself :)

There is another type of Madhukauns that uses the additional dhaivata in the avaroha. The hindustani equivalent of Shuddhadhanyasi is called Dhani and it is an afternoon raga.

I noticed the raga mudra in chandra kanti by RKS and Rakshamam by Ashok Madhav but I don't think it is typical. By the way Ashok Madhav lives in the USA.

lakshman: are there more than one version of Madhukauns? could you give me some more songs in this raga? Is there a Madhukauns in Hindhusthani music and if so what are the notes?
- From: Lakshman (@ ppp7889.on.bellglobal.com)

isai rasigai:
Madhukauns is a hindustani raga. The second type uses the same svaras as Shuddhadhanysi but with M2 and D2. You also mentione ragas ending with kauns. Here are some more: Apart from Malkauns, Chandrakauns and Madhukauns there is Sampurna Malkauns, Pancham Malkauns, Suryakauns, Ranjankauns, Jogkauns, Nandkauns, Harikauns and Jayakauns. Just thought you might be interested.

There is a link between these raagas. They can be obtained from each other by Grahabhedam !! Maybe L. was responding to this subliminal connection.
The raga Gopriya j62 retruns itself on Grahabheda of any of its notes.

Nadopasaka:
you are right about Gopriya. It is called the Debussey scale because he popularized it. The composition that I have is Na moravina rada-Rupaka by Dr.S.Ramanathan.
Here's what I found about the kauns scales
Malkauns : S G2 M1 D2 N2 S; S N2 D2 M1 G2 S
Suryakauns : S G2 M1 D3 N3 S; S N3 D3 M1 G2 S
Chandrakauns : S G2 M1 D2 N3 S; S N3 D2 M1 G2 S
Madhukauns : S G2 M2 P N2 S; S N2 P M2 G2 S (1st type)
S G2 M2 P N2 S; S N2 D2 P G2 S (2nd type)
Ranjankauns : S G2 M1 D2 N3 S; S N3 D2 N3 D1 M G2 S
Nandkauns : S G3 M1 P M1 D2 N3 S; S N3 D2 P M1 G3 S G2 S
Nabhkauns : S G2 M1 D2 N2 S; S N3 D2 M1 G2 S
Harikauns : S R1 M2 D2 N3 S; S N3 D2 M2 R1 S
Jayakauns : N2 S R1 M1 M2 M1 D2 N2 S; S N2 D2 M1 M2 M1 R1 S
I was not able to get the scales for Mohankauns and Jogkauns

Thanks for the "kauns" summary Lakshman - any popular melodies in these ragas?

Lakshman, I have heard of KaunsiKanada as well, but that might be of a different ilk.
As an aside Kauns might be derived from kaunsi or kaunsa meaning 'which' one. No wonder there are so many !!
Isairasigai, there is Kandenaa Govinda by Bombay Jaysree on the bharat.com site
- From: IR (@ columbo.lifeworks.com)

that is in chandrakauns nado - I know that song - lovely ::))
I am looking for those other "kauns" that Lakshman posted

Isai rasigai and others:
All the kauns ending rags that I posted are hindustani ragas. Except for chandrakauns (chandrika for BMK) I don't think there are any karnatak kritis. But I will check.
Kaunsi kanada is a combination of raga kaunsi and darbari kanada. There are many ragas that end with kanada and many that start with kaunshi. If you are interested I can hunt for some khayal compositions in these ragas.

Doesn't the BMK kriti classify as 'Hindustani' ? (ooops !)

Do some raagas have a predisposition towards a particular talam ? I notice Adi talam is popular with many of the rare raagas.

I do not think so Nado. Adhi thaalam and Rupaka Thaalam are relatively easier to set krithis in compared to the Chaappu varieties. I cannot think of any other reason!
