I just finished reading Deshpande's 'A Matter of Time' and really enjoyed her writing style. She kept me engaged in the novel until the ending through the use of some very creative techniques - such as speaking to the readers directly in some portions of the novel. Thus, I am opening this thread for others who have read any of Deshpande's works (or 'A Matter of Time') and would like to offer their commentary/opinions/recommendation (of her other works). We can discuss the plot/characters/meaning/use of imagery or symbols in 'A Matter of Time.'

It's great to find so many folks interested in Deshpande.A tremendously great writer she is! Barring from the predominating feminist view point in her novels ,there is a significant and true portrayal of the human life and an individuals constant endeavour to 'live' life fighting against the odds. But often , there is something of that digging out of the past, that reflects or rather indicates that this is just the repetition of the past but with a new response.

hai friends,
I am doing my research on not just Shashi deshpande but on all the Indian english women novelists who have written between 1950s and 1990s. i am sure that without shashi deshpande there is no work especially for the 90s. all her novels are relevant to my topic. hence i have collected most of the material. i will be able to help, if you can write to me. i will know what you require. or i can send my bibliography to know what you require from me. o.k.

hello everyone..
i am a student of architecture at roorkee and recently finished reading 'that long silence'..i read it cause was a part of a course.
though i picked it up as an assignment and am still very far from married life, yet i was soon deeply engrossed in it and felt the novel held so much for me.
contrary to what our teacher had told us abt the novel, while giving lengthy lectures on the history of feminism, i found it to be stricly humanist, and utterly honest account.. what liked best was jaya's conversation with kamat..when she realises her family is the hole in which she has hidden all her life...and towards the end when she laughs at her husband, or maybe at the whole situation..i wud like read more books by her..any suggestions?

hi everyone. even i am doing a research on shashi deshpande's novels. i think she is the most balanced n realist writer amongst all the indian writers. well to all check out the article by ritu menon called 'no longer silent' very well written plus there are seven books published on her works by prestige n creative books. check out the one by y. s. sunita reddy n the one by indira nityanandam. out all these two are the most insightful.
all the best to all.

In 1998 my husband and I interviewed Sashi Deshpande in Bangalore. I have used the material in classes and have written up the interview notes, but have not attempted to polish for publication. I would be willing to share the notes with people doing research on her work. She is a careful, thoughtful, writer, exacting and astute.
