Shakespeare is outdated and I find no reason to study it next year. When Shakespeare wrote all those plays and sonnets he produced them merely for entertainment and did not want them to be disected today in our schools. We do not speak that kind of english anymore and questions like " What was Shakespeare thinking when he wrote this piece of work ? " have me completely stumped. I do not get why we have to answer questions like that when the man has been dead for some time .

I am so glad that you do not get to decide the school sylabus. Skakespeare wrote beautifully, and romantically

Spike' s cousin not so spiky:
You should search for the A.L. Rowse edited Contemporary Shakespeare series - they are available as individual plays (cheap about $US 3-5) or bound multi-play hardcovers. He recoginized the problems with the archaic language and modernized it judiciously. Judiciously is the keyword - he was a Shakespeare and Elizabethan scholar. The books are out of print, but they turn up in second-hand bookshops all the time. Some are available (used) at bookfinder.com and new at bn.com and amazon.com

tell me if this sonnet could ever become outdated?
When in the chronicle of wasted time
I see descriptions of the fairest wights,
And beauty making beautiful old rhyme
In praise of ladies dead and lovely knights,
Then, in the blazon of sweet beauty's best,
Of hand, of foot, of lip, of eye, of brow,
I see their antique pen would have express'd
Even such a beauty as you master now.
So all their praises are but prophecies
Of this our time, all you prefiguring;
And, for they look'd but with divining eyes,
They had not skill enough your worth to sing:
For we, which now behold these present days,
Had eyes to wonder, but lack tongues to praise.
(wight = a living being)

Personally I love Shakespeare. I think he deals with very basic, universal human emotions and feelings.....such as revenge, love, and pride....and writes about them in the most elegant and beautiful way. It's not as much what he writes about, as much as it is how he writes. One reason I love Shakespeare besides his style is that whenever I read or attend one of his plays, I never walk out thinking "that was terrible." His sonnets are amazing, and many people point to him as the most accomplished writer ever. Is he outdated? That's silly, because eventually everyone becomes outdated. Why he is still taught, besides his obvious talent with syntax and diction, is because the topics of his works transcend any time period or location. Shakespeare, in my opinion, will never stop being read....and I think he will be the measuring stick of all great playwrights for a very long time.

Shakespeare is outdated and I see no reason to study it in school because there are so many things out there that are better. This stuff is 400 years old. People say they get it, but no one really does. Besides, shakespeare didn't even write his own plays.

we study shakespeare because not only is he the greatist english writers of all time, but he has enveloped himseld in the english language with his creation of many words in our vocabulary, foe example alligator, eyeball, dawn and bedroom. Words that are very elementary but all coined by one man.

I love Shakespeare,I hate Him. Don't ask me why I have this love-relationship,but I just do .I mean, I find it extremely frustrating how we have to decipher his archaic languuage. And one that is changing and unstable as well.(you don't know how many ways he he might address "you" Can't he just stick with the same word that means the same thing in each of his plays? But this guy does have all of beautiful imagery and poetic phrases.I guess we keep on studying him because the themes about human nnature are still evident in us.It's just that we're in a different time. Maybe we could give ourrself a challenge?
